Notes for V
ALENTIN HEITZ:

Valentin Heitz, his wife Sofia and their first son Colestin "Celic" immigrated to America in 1831 from Schutterwald/Hofen, Germany. Hofen, at that time was in the Grand Duchy of Baden and is located near the Rhein River opposite Strasbourg, France. It is a suburb of Schutterwald and lies just southwest of Offenberg. The marriage record of Valentin and Sofia could not be found in the church books for St Jakobus in Schutterwald. They sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. After arriving in Philadelphia, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. There, they lived along Cleves Warsaw Road at the intersecting point of Green/Miami and Delhi Townships of Hamilton County. They were recorded in the 1840 census, but the family name was spelled "Haightz". They lived in the Cincinnati area until about 1847. During this time, 5 additional children were born, Michael, William, Mary, Theresa and John. They then purchased land in Jefferson County, Indiana near the Indian-Kentuck Creek. This area became China, Indiana. China became a settlement for many German immigrants between 1850-1880. A number of family lines came from Schutterwald, Germany to China and Madison, Indiana, such as Elble/Huck/Lothspeich/Junker/ and others. I feel the Heitz and Geyman families were leaders in this settlement. The Heitz line operated mills on the Indian-Kentuck Creek and some of it's branches for about 90 years. Descendants of Valentin were also instrumental in the founding and building of St Anthony's Catholic Church in China.
