Paul G. Batyko Sr. April 26, 2006

Paul G. Batyko Sr., 81, died Wednesday at the VNA Hospice Unit at Moses Taylor Hospital. He was the husband of Charlotte Rillstone. They were married 58 years.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Kuzemka Batyko. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and the University of Scranton. Before retiring, he was the territorial manager for Ames Pharmaceutical Co.

He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, serving as trustee and treasurer. He served as president of the Holy Name Society He was past vice president of Elmhurst Country Club and a member of the Scranton Elks Club and the Greek Catholic Union of the USA.

He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving with the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant with the 53rd Wing bomber division in Saipan and Iwo Jima.

Before his illness, he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and playing cards with friends.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Slavin and husband, Joseph, Philadelphia; a son; Paul Jr. and wife, Ann Marie, Scranton; eight grandchildren, Joseph, Douglas and Krysanna Slavin; Paul III, Christopher, Matthew, Phillip and Maria Batyko. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Michael, Robert and Eugene.

The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Chipak Funeral Home, 343 Madison Ave., with Divine Liturgy at 10 in St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment, parish cemetery, Minooka section.

Friends may call today, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Parastas at 3; rosary at 7 by the Holy Name Society. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may go to the VNA Hospice, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, 18447.

Ruth A. Rillstone July 15, 2001

Ruth A. Rillstone, of West Scranton, died Sunday at the home of her son, James, Muncy Valley, Lycoming County, after a long illness. She was the widow of Edward Rillstone, who died in 1997.

Born July 8, 1918, in Elmhurst, daughter of the late Warren and Ella Russell Wells, she was employed by Mallard Sportswear for 25 years before retirement. She was a life member and first president of the Berean Interdenominational Church and was a 15-year volunteer at the West Side Senior Citizens Center.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be sorrowfully missed.

Also surviving are another son, Edward F., Avondale; four sisters, Katherine Dowse, Scranton; Mildred Canterbury, Hudson Falls, N.Y.; Cora Canterbury, Lewiston, N.Y., and Helen Smith, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Peter; and three sisters, Edith Walters, Nellie Wells and Mary Kilgallon.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Davies and Jones Funeral Chapel Inc., 135 S. Main Ave., with services by the Rev. Gerald Major III, Youth for Christ minister. Interment, Forest Hill Cemetery, Dunmore.

Friends may call Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berean Interdenominational Church, 2752 Jackson St., 18504.

Mildred Piepoli, 80, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, died Sunday morning in the Hospice Unit of Mercy Hospital. She was the widow of Peter P. Piepoli Sr., who died on Nov. 8, 1993.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late James and Freida Rose Rillstone, she graduated from Scranton Technical High School and worked for Scranton Embroidery for over 25 years before going to work for Scranton Lace, where she retired after eight years of service. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Trinity United Church of Christ, South Scranton.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who loved baking, gardening and the tradition of each holiday season. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Brower, a son, Peter P. Jr., and a sister, Charlotte Batyko, all of Scranton, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch St., with services by the Rev. Richard Bayles, pastor, Trinity United Church of Christ. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
