The Bishop Family Tree contains reliable entries back to James A. Bishop in the middle 1800s. Names prior to that go back to the mid 1700s in Virginia, but are largely the product of family lore, more than formal research. Much of the information contained in that branch comes directly from Family Reunions and interviews with living relatives. However, in the Fall of 1999, a distant cousin, named Mary Bishop who lives in KY began providing excellent information on the origins of the Bishop clan in VA and KY, starting with George Bishop in the late 1700s, with documented data for George Mason Bishop of the 1800 time period, who was probably born in VA and moved to KY. Other families represented in the Bishop tree in large "quantities" are Willis, Schorle, Herman, and Anderson. Most of the original family roots are from Kentucky, and we are now represented in most of the U.S. and particularly in Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois. Linda Ruffner Bishop's family includes the Horners, Ruffners, Hambricks, Pritts, and Todds in West Virginia & Virginia; names go back reliably to the middle 1800s. All of the research on this side of the tree has been done by Linda through exhaustive efforts at the National Archives in Washington, DC and personal visits to the various family ancestral sites.
