Notes for DeVilo Stelman Bishop:
DeVilo Bishop met Hazel Dinning when they were both working in rival grocery stores. He was working at Burt Fox's and Hazel was working for Alexander's. They got married in Elkhart, Indiana in 1937. Previously DeVilo had lived with his brother Melvin in Belding and worked at a garage. In April 1937 he began working at the State Hospital. He earned $55 a month and lived on the Hill. He worked 12 hours a day. Later he lived off the hill and made $67.50 a month. They rented a house in South Ionia for $8/mo. Then in 1938 they bought the house next door for about $1,100. (In 1955 they sold the house for about $6,500). When Max was born in 1939 DeVilo was making about $90/mo working 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. DeVilo worked the night shift at the State Hospital until he retired, and frequently worked other jobs as well. After Hazel died, DeVilo married Beryl McPherson Matthews, a widow with two children, Marcia and Ross. DeVilo and Beryl live in a Victorian house on Main Street in Ionia, which they have both made into a beautifully restored and warmly inviting home. The combined family often gathers there to celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays. Beryl and DeVilo both enjoy playing golf, traveling, and maintaining their yard and house.
