2. WILLIAM ANDERSON2 WIGGS (JAMES K.1) was born February 16, 1827 in Claiborn County Tennessee, and died May 13, 1910 in Mapleton, Monona County Iowa. He married (1) MIRANDA JOSEPHINE HOUCHINS. She was born 1842, and died 1919. He married (2) CATHARINE SMITH January 16, 1851. She died July 21, 1862.

ILLIAM ANDERSON WIGGS:
William Anderson Wiggs enlisted in the Mexican War under the alias "JOHN KELLY" on May 1847, at New Orleans, LA. He served as a private in Capt. Featherston's Company E, 3rd Battalion of Louisana Volunteers, and was discharged 15 March 1848. His pension records were obtained from the National Archives (#16912) and contained his signed application dated 3 April 1907, on which he stated his first marriage was to CATHERINE SMITH 16 Jan 1851, and she died 21 July 1862; his second marriage was to MARINDA J HOUCHINS 11 May 1863 at Rushville, Rush Co IN. His living children and their birthdates were: MRS F L STREET 25 Nov 1853; C H WIGGS 19 July 1858; MRS E C FRITZ 20 Aug 1864; MRS R A JOHNS 25 March 1867; J W F WIGGS 28 Dec 1870; A C WIGGS 1 May 1874; MRS E J BAKER 28 Nov 1876; L L WIGGS 19 July 1880; and O A WIGGS 6 March 1883.

ARCHIBALD K WIGGS signed an Affidavit made in Hamilton County IN on 22 Aug 1888, stating that his is 57 years old, and a brother to WILLIAM A WIGGS, alias "JOHN KELLY." Another Affidavit was signed by making his mark by JAMES K WIGGS, also of Hamilton County IN, who says he is 87 years old, and the father of WILLIAM WIGGS, alias "JOHN KELLY." His post office address is Cicero IN.

On 29 May 1888, WILLIAM A WIGGS, alias "JOHN KELLY" made his own Affidavit in Tipton County IN, making the following declarations in an effort to be placed on the pension rolls: "The I am the identical JOHN KELLY, late private of Co 12 Louisanna Infantry under Captain James A Featherston, and that I enlisted in 1847 on or about the 20 day of May and was discharged on or about the 15 day of March 1848 and that I actually served sixty days in the military service in War of Mexico in ____ thereto. And that I am and was 62 years of age at the date of said Act January 29, 1887. That I was born on the 16 day of February 1823. And that I enlisted under the name of JOHN KELLEY. And I hereby appoint JAMES N WAUGH of Tipton County Indiana my legal attorney to prosecute my claim."

WILLIAM A WIGGS was granted a pension in the amount of $8 per month on 15 Sept 1888, retroactive to 29 Jan 1887, according to an Act of Congress.

On 22 June 1894, WILLIAM A WIGGS, age 69 years, a resident of Mapleton in the County of Monona and State of Indiana, made an appeal to have his pension increased. He states that his is now suffering and afflicted with kidney trouble or disease since 1867 and liver trouble or disease since 1848, and is now unable to perform manual labor and has been for the last two years. His support is the $8 per month pension and the milk from one cow. His only property is a vacant lot 60 x 150 ft, being Lot 10 in Block 10 in the Town of East Mapleton, valued at $50; the cow valued at $30; and a small amount of household goods and furniture. He has a wife and a 10-year old son who totally depend on him for support, and a son 13-years old who is partially dependent upon him for support.

WILLIAM A WIGGS made a Declaration for Invalid Pension on 14 Feb 1907, and again says that his alias was JOHN KELLY as he served in the Mexican War; that he is 80 years of age, a resident of Mapleton, Monona Co IA for the past 17 years, his occupation was a farmer, and he was born 16 Feb 1827 in Claibourn Co TN.

A "Drop Order and Report" was filed 15 June 1910 stating that WILLIAM A WIGGS alias "JOHN KELLY" died 13 May 1910, and he was last paid $20 per month to 4 April 1910.

MARINDA WIGGS of Mapleton, Monona Co IA, widow of WILLIAM A WIGGS, filed her claim to continue receiving a pension on 6 June 1910. She is 67 years old. A certified copy of Marriage License and Clerk's Report shows that WILLIAM A WIGGS and MARINDA HALL were issued a license to marry in Rush Co IN on 8 May 1863, and that LAURENCE NIXSOM JP joined them in marriage on 11 May 1863.

On 20 Sept 1916, MARINDA WIGGS files another Declaration for Widow's Pension on which she states she is a resident of Mapleton, Monona Co IA, widow of WILLIAM A WIGGS, and is 74 years old (28 Oct 1916). The pensioner was dropped from the roll because of her death on 20 Sept 1919.

The 1850 census of Union Twp, Union Co IN lists WILLIAM WIGGS, as 23 yrs, male, occupation school teacher, born OH (?) in household #751 with JOSEPH M STEWARD and family. Nancy S Robbins, 123 W North St, Kosciusko MS 39090 stated in her notes of 30 Nov 1995, that WILLIAM A WIGGS is shown on the Butler Co OH census with his parents, age 23, b TN.

The census of Billingsville, Union Twp, Union Co IN taken 23 July 1860, gives WILLIAM A WIGGS, age 33 yrs, male, occupation farmer, b TN on pg 132. Others include his wife, CATHERINE WIGGS, age 28 yrs, b IN; JAMES K WIGGS, age 8 yrs, male, b OH; FRANCES L WIGGS, age 6 yrs, female, b OH; JOHN W S WIGGS, age 4 yrs, male, b OH; and CHARLES, age 1 yr, male, b OH.

In 1870, WILLIAM A WIGGS is age 42 yrs, male occupation farming and teaching, b TN, listed in Adams Twp, Hamilton Co IN. Others include his second wife, JOSEPHINE WIGGS, age 27 yrs, female, b VA; JAMES K R WIGGS, age 18 yrs, male, working on farm, b OH; FRANCIS L WIGGS, age 16 yrs, female, at home, b IN; JOHN W S WIGGS, age 14 yrs, male, working on farm, b IN; CHARLES H WIGGS, age 12 yrs, male, at home, b IN; ELIZA C WIGGS, age 6 yrs, female, b IN; and ALICE R WIGGS, age 4 yrs, female, b IN.

The 1880 Adams Twp, Hamilton Co IN census lists WILLIAM A WIGGS, age 54 yrs; MARINDA WIGGS, age 37 yrs; CHARLES WIGGS, age 21 yrs, b OH; ELIZA C WIGGS, age 15 yrs, b IN; ALICE R WIGGS, age 13 yrs, b IN;WILLIAM S WIGGS, age 9 yrs, b IN; ALBERT C WIGGS, age 6 yrs, b IN; and ELLA J WIGGS, age 3 yrs.

1900 Mapleton, Monona Co IA census lists WILLIAM A WIGGS, b Feb 1827, TN, age 73 yrs, retired 49 yrs, father b NC, mother b TN, owns his home free and clear, MARINDA WIGGS, wife, b Oct 1842 VA, married 49 yrs, mother of 7 living children, both parents b VA; LOUIS WIGGS, b IN July 1880, age 19 yrs; ORA WIGGS, b IN March 1883, age 17 yrs.

The 1910 census, also from Mapleton, Monona Co IA shows WILLIAM A WIGGS, age 83 yrs, married 47 yrs; MARINDA J WIGGS, age 66 yrs, mother of 10 children, 8 living; JOSEPHINE (WIGGS), granddaughter, age 9 yrs, b IA.

WILLIAM A WIGGS d 13 May 1910, age 83 yrs 2 mos 28 da, and is buried in Plot 3 at Mt Hope Cemetery at Mapleton, Monona Co IA. In Plot 2 is "Mother" LEONA B WIGGS 1883-1925, who was the wife of ORA B WIGGS, son of William.
