6. MELCENA P. (MELLIE)4 TAYLOR (ISAAC3, FREDERICK2, UNK. TAYLOR (OR1 SCHNEIDER)276 was born Nov 1868 in Cabell Co., West Virginia277, and died 23 May 1908 in Huntington, Cabell Co., West Virginia278. She married (2) CHARLES EDWARD WALLACE279 05 Mar 1898 in Gallia Co., Ohio280, son of DAVID WALLACE and CELIA WITHERS. He was born 21 Aug 1860 in Mason Co., [West] Virginia281, and died 15 Nov 1918 in Apple Grove, Mason Co., West Virginia282,283.

Notes for M
ELCENA P. (MELLIE) TAYLOR:
[Melody Black, May 2000]
Cabell County Births for years 1868 - 1870 are missing from the courthouse records except for a couple entries. These records are also missing from the LDS microfilms made in 1960s of the original courthouse records.

[Melody Black, Dec 2000]
I have used the spelling of "Melcena" for my great-grandmother's name. MELCENA was the spelling supplied on Isaac Taylor's (her father's) Civil War pension application papers. Although the application does not appear to be in Isaac's own handwriting, this spelling can assumed to be at least phonetically correct since the information was being supplied by her own father. Other spellings found on census records are: 1870, Melcina (age 2); 1880, Melcina or Melvina. (The microfilm is very hard to read due to water damage); 1900, Nille.
Her name appears as Nellie on her marriage license in Gallia Co., Ohio. The information for the license was supplied by her soon to be husband, Charles Edward Wallace. Melcena's signature does not appear on the marriage license. The Ohio Marriage Index on Ancestry.com lists her name as Millie. On various other records, her name also appeared as Mellie, Millie, Nellie and Melvina.
Birth records in Cabell Co., WV and Mason Co., WV have been searched without finding any record of Melcena's birth. From information gathered on other records, it appears that Melcena was born in Cabell Co.,WV between 1868 - 1869. Record of Isaac & Rhoda Taylor residing in Cabell Co. can be found for year's preceding Melcena's birth and for several years following her birth (1865=marriage; 1870 = census; 1866, 1872, 1873, 1875, 1880 = births of other children) so it is probable that the family was located in Cabell Co. WV at the time of Melcena's birth in 1868-1869. Cabell County birth records are missing for the years 1868-1870, which is during the expected timeframe of Melcena's birth. So to date there is no proof that the family was residing in Cabell Co. West Virginia at the time of Melcena's birth or that she was born between 1868-1869.
No official record of her death has been found although based on hospital records, Melcena died in Cabell Co., WV. From the West Virginia Asylum records, her name appeared as Mellie. Mellie was committed to the West Virginia Asylum by her husband three weeks after the birth of her daughter Jewel in July 1907. Mellie died at the Asylum 10 months later. To date, her gravesite has not been located so no tombstone inscription is available to provide further clues to her name or date of birth.

Chapter XXIII; State Institutions]

The West Virginia Asylum was established as the West Virginia Asylum for Incurables at Huntington, Cabell county, by act of legislature February 17, 1897. This supplied a place for the humane keeping of the unfortunate incurables of the state's insane persons. Almost $400,000 have been expended for the construction of this institution. The name was changed by act of legislature in 1903 to the West Virginia Asylum.

[Cabell Co. Annals & Families, George Selden Wallace, 1933]

In 1916, the name of the hospital was changed to the Huntington State Hospital. It is situated on a tract of land consisting of thirty acres on the foothills in the eastern edge of Huntington and fronts old Norway Avenue. The original home was a single building 3 stories high. In Mar 1935, the state bought the old Geo McKendree farm of 450 acres near Barboursville to be used in connection with this institution.

[M.Black, Nov 2001]
Dorothy Wagner, granddaughter, believes Melcena is possibly buried at Colwell Cemetery in Mason Co., West Virginia. The Mason Co., WV Cemetery Inscriptions listing for Colwell cemetery does not contain any Wallaces. However, an actual "reading" of the cemetery was not performed. Rather the names of those possibly buried in this cemetery were provided by Bill Kirk.
I have checked the Spring Hill Cemetery listing in Cabell County Cemetery book for Melcena's name. I checked under both Taylor and Wallace and found no evidence of Melcena. Spring Hill was the cemetery close to the State Hospital, where burials occurred for patients' whose bodies were not returned to their families.
