Born at Chuckatuck, Nansemond County, Virginia, 7-7-1634 and died in December of 1699. in Isle of Wight Co., Thomas married ca. 1658-9 in Isle of Wight Co. to Margaret Brasseur., b. 1642, Sept. and died 12-07-1708, a daughter of Robert Brasseur.Robert was born ca. 1620 in Avignon, France, and died 1665 in Calvert Co., Md.The Brasseurs were Huguenots and lived for a time in Virginia, but because of religious persecution, Robert moved to Maryland, where conditions were more tolerable.During the spread of the Quaker movement in Virginia by George Fox, a noted minister from England, the young girl Margaret became converted at the age of 16, and she was evidently influential in persuading others of the Jordan family and their neighbors to also join this Quaker group, also called the Society of Friends.Because of their belief, both Thomas and Margaret Jordan suffered much persecution by the authorities, having their tobacco crops and other property confiscated, paying heavy fines, and even spending months in prison.Of the ten children, eight remained in the Quaker faith with Thomas and Samuel becoming Episcopalians.

Notes for Margaret Brasseur: [lesa.FTW] The Brasseurs were Huguenots and lived for a time in Virginia, but because of religious persecution, Robert Brasseur moved to Maryland, where conditions were more tolerable. At the age of sixteen, or about 1658, Margaret Brashere, the wife of Thomas Jordan, united with The Truth (Quakers or Friends) and was no doubt responsible for leading her husband "into the light".The Religious Society of Friends, (Quakers) was founded about 1647 when England was in a religious upheaval.Various groups - Anglican, Puritan, Roman Catholic - were ripping the country apart.Into this turmoil came George Fox (1624 - 1691) founder of "The Religious Society of Friends".His followers soon adopted the name of "Quakers" because Fox had told a judge to "quake and tremble at the word of God".These people formed a group that was not concerned with the religious wrangling that surged around them. They renounced all kinds of war and strife. They had no definite creed, no ordained ministry. All they wanted was to have peace and to get on with the job of serving God and his people.William Penn, Protestant saint and founder of Pennsylvania, set up a refuge in America for Quakers and other persecuted people. Many Quakers had left England for America by 1656 and settled up and down the East Coast from Rhode Island to North Carolina. The Virginia General Assembly passed laws in 1660 which prohibited Quakers from coming into the Providence of Virginia. For his new faith, Thomas Jordan of Chuckatuck endured all the persecutions that were visited upon the Quakers, both in Virginia and England. He was imprisoned and he had property confiscated.Eight of the ten sons of Thomas and Margaret continued in The Faith.Only Thomas Jordan III and Samuel Jordan became Episcopalians.Thomas Jordan (1634 -1700) was sheriff of Nansemond County, Virginia, in 1699 and a Burgess of that county 1696-1699. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------ Thomas Jordan and his Margaret, had ten sons.Several genealogical works ascribe two daughters (Elizabeth and Margaret) born to them, but most evidence favors these two as being daughters-in-law.She died at age 66.
