Descendants of George Klees, Sr.

Generation No. 1

      1. George1 Klees, Sr. was born Abt. 1753 in Eckenheim, north of Frankfurt-Am-Main, Germany, and died Abt. 1820. He married Elizabeth Rhodes October 30, 1787 in Zion (Spies) Church, Alsace Twp., Berks Co., PA. She was born Abt. 1768, and died January 18, 1850.

Notes for George Klees, Sr.:
George Klees was a Hessian soldier who fought for England during the Revolutionary War. He was captured at Saratoga. At the end of the war he indentured himself in order to remain in this country. He eventually located his family in Hunter's Run, Lycoming Co., Pa.

In 1790 George Klees and his fellow Hessian, Daniel Heil, cut a road through the wilderness and pioneered the European settlement of Quakake Valley in northwestern Carbon Co., PA.

A deed for some land belonging to him was recorded in Easton, PA. the 15th of January, 1810 (Northkampton Deeds E-3-336). This deed was in the possession of his grandson, Isaac Klees of Washington, Iowa. Isaac was the son of George's son George. It is a deed for 200 acres and 37 & 1/2 perchesof land in the Quakeake Valley in what was then Northhampton County. George Kless (the spelling of the name in the record) was mentioned as "of Luzerne Township, Northampton County". He paid 105 pounds and 5 shillings for this land to Joseph Hiester of Reading (this was one of Pennsylvania's early governers). Luzerne Township was probably part of Schuylkill, Carbon or Monroe Counties, since these were later formed from land which in 1810 belonged to Northampton County (Schuylkill & Monroe only in part, Carbon entirely).

George Klees married Elizabeth Rhodes of Philadelphia. She died at the home of her son Henry in 1844 in Lycoming County.
