Sophia Therese Rankin, or Ne-kick-o-qua, was the daughter of a British trader and granddaughter of Ashawabemy (an Ottawa from the environs of Mackinac who had settled among the French-speaking families at the Bay during the latter third of the 18th century and married into a prominent Menomini family).
Ashawabemy built a bark cabin with a central fireplace and married off his daughters and granddaughters to white traders and voyageurs, granting to each a portion of his lands along the west bank of the Fox River.

Mrs. Baird referred to her family and friends as having "chiefly blood," "mixed-blood," or simply as "French." For example, Baird wrote in "Territorial Wisconsin" that "Indian mats were used instead of carpets, as with all French families at this time."
Baird was describing the Grignon home occupied by Louis Grignon, a French trader, his wife, who spoke only Ojibwe (though she also was part Menominee), and their mixed-heritage daughters.
