Notes for ROUSE BLY:
from "Norway Tidings": at 13 years, apprenticed to Benjamin Marvin of Utica to learn the carpenters trade. He served in the War of 1812 as substitute for an elder brother. In 1815 he left Utica with a horse, light wagon and chest of carpenters tools to seek a home and fortune in the west. His first step was at Meadville Pa., where he worked till the fall of 1817. During the winter of 1817-1818, he traveled through southern Ohio into Kentucky and back again to Ohio (via. Cincinnati) to Coluimbus, where he became acquainted with Hon. Mordecai Bartley, a member of the legislature and through his influence went to Mansfield, Ohio, where he purchased a half section of wild land........1820 married Mary Barney....1822 was appointed justice of the peace, with his commission bearing the signature of Gov. Allen Trimble.
