DESCENDANTS OF JAMES BOATRIGHT (B. ~1745)

Generation No. 2

      2. BENJAMIN (Benoni)2 Boatwright (JAMES1 Boatright)39 was born 8 Sep 1769 in Cumberland Co., VA40, and died 13 Jun 1816 in Powhatan Co., VA. He married ELIZABETH Blackburn41 19 Apr 1797 in Powhatan Co., VA42, daughter of JAMES Blackburn and RHODA Baugh. She was born 1 Jul 1779 in Cumberland Co., VA43, and died 11 Sep 1862 in Paint Lick, Garrard Co., KY.

Notes for BENJAMIN (Benoni) Boatwright:
-- Benjamin died intestate. Elizabeth Blackburn, his widow, was appointed Administrator of his estate after his death in 1816. She moved to Kentucky with some of her children about 1821. A petition filed in Garrard Co., KY circuit court by William Blackburn of Powhatan Co., Va. claimed that she illegally removed property of Benjamin's estate from Virginia jurisdiction. William had signed a surety bond for Elizabeth and he wanted to be removed from responsibility.

See record of Benjamin's Estate: Powhatan Co., Va. Will book 5, pp 105 & 122.
-- (BENONI)..."Son of my sorrow", a Biblical reference, Genesis 35:18.
Story of Rachel, wife of Jacob: 'And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.'

-- From "Boatwright's of Virginia", R.G. Boatright, 1961:
Benjamin was probably born in that part of Cumberland County, Va. which later became a part of what is now Powhatan County. Powhatan County was created in the year 1777 from portions of Cumberland and Chesterfield counties. He died in Powhatan County, Va. 13 June 1816. He apparently was a large land owner.

See: Powhatan Co. Virginia Will Book 5, p. 105 for probate record; Estate inventory... Will Book 5, p. 122.

-- The marriage records of Powhatan County show that Benjamin married Elizabeth Blackburn 19 April 1797. She was a daughter of James Blackburn and Rhoda Baugh who were then residing in Buckingham Co., Va. The witnesses to this marriage were: John Radford and Judith Blackburn.
See: "Powhatan County, Va. - Marriage Records".

-- Benjamin Boatwright was listed in the 1810 census of Powhatan County. He and a William Blackburn are listed next to each other, which would indicate that they were enumerated at the same time. It is assumed that William Blackburn was a brother of Elizabeth Blackburn.

Notes for ELIZABETH Blackburn:
1. See Ricker, "Boat(w)right's of Southeastern USA", p. 160.

There were many claims of Cherokee Indian Heritage made to Dawes commission in 1890's based on belief that Elizabeth was descended from an Indian tribe. Many claims refer to "Polly Carter, daughter of James and Rhoda Blackburn and a half-sister of Elizabeth." Her name was said to appear on the Rolls of 1835 - East of the Mississippi River.

2. RGB: "Boatwright's of Virginia", 1961...
"In the 1820 census of Powhatan County, Va., we find the widow, Elizabeth Boatwright and children still living in Powhatan County; Benjamin, the husband and father had died in 1816. She was Administrator of the Estate.
"...This writer has a photostat copy of what appears to have been a daguerreotype picture of Elizabeth Blackburn taken about 1860 with this notation on the back:
"Elizabeth Blackburn born July 1, 1779 - Cumberland City, Virginia."

(Note: Denny Boatright of Springfield provided me with copy of this photo in 1998. There is a very poor xerox copy in notes of W.E. Boatright accompanying material submitted by Norman Ricker to LDS, microfilm #1597698. See p. 241 of material following "Index and Outline"...dgb).

"In 1821, Elizabeth, a widow, went to Madison county, Kentucky taking with her all of the children with the exception of Martha Gill who was then married to James Kelley and James Blackburn who was also either married or soon to be married. He is marriage is recorded as 17 Oct 1821. Elizabeth settled near Kirksville, Kentucky.

3. A law suit was brought against Elizabeth by William Blackburn of Virginia who was an administrator of James' Will claiming Elizabeth improperly removed portions of James' estate to Kentucky. See "Garrard County Index to Circuit Court Chancery", Vockery, Kentucky..V872:

  Notes for Lucy B. Boatwright:
From notes by R. G. Boatright:

William L. Boatright, Attorney General of Colorado, says in 1928, that Lucy and her sister Rhoda Ann migrated to Missouri after marriage and raised large families around Platte and Nodaway Counties.
James P. Todd of Paint Lick, KY states that his records show that Lucy
married an Isaac "Case". A search of the early marriage records of Madison County, KY may clear the discrepancy.
(Note: copy of Boatright family Bible page shows that Isaac's name could be interpreted 'COX', dgb)
