James and Thankful were married Mar 1, 1738 at Middletown Colony of Conn. They bought several farms in Goshen, CT and improved them. In 1768 they moved with their six youngest children 200 miles north up the Connecticut River and became the first settlers of what is now Strafford, VT. The four older ones would join them next spring. With a pair of oxen pulling a heavily loaded wagon they followed only a blazed trail cutting their way through deep, virgin forests. The menfolk walked and mother rode on one horse and whomever needed rest most road another one. Thankful slept under the wagon.
BIOGRAPHY: Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer states: "James Pennock was a man of more than ordinary abilities. 16 March, 1770, the second year after he moved into town, he was appointed Justice of the Peace, by New York authorities. On 17 March, 1770, he received a commission as Assistant Justice of the Superior Court of Common Pleas for Gloucester and thus attended a session of the Court at Kingsland (now Washington) held May, 1770. He attended other sessions of the same Court at Newbury in 1773 and 1774. Several of James's sons occupied important public positions in the town of Strafford."
