Before the Civil War Charles moved his family from Grayson County toCarroll County Virginia and lived in the wilderness at the foot of several large mountains near what is today called Lamsburg. At the age of 54 years Charles volunteered to serve in the Arny of the Confederate States along with four of his sons, George, Samuel, Joseph and Greenberry, they served in the 45th Verginia Infantry, Co. E. The company was mustered May 29, 1861 at Wytheville, Virginia. It took part in the campaigns in 1861 in West Virginia and in the spring of 1864 took part in the battle near Clyods farm in Pulaski County and Piedmont County, Virginia. They fought at White Sulphur Springs on August of 1863 and was part of Jubal Early's Army in the Shenandoah Valley.
