Notes for Anna Mary Schmit: Anna attended school in an old school building, which had two rooms with four grades in each. She was taught by Notre Dame sisters for eight years. "The summers when I was going to grade school I helped my mother in the garden and we raised a flock of geese and chickens, which my brothers, Matt and Carl, had to help me with. If we had to take the geese to a green pasture, we had to move their wire fence and haul water and feed to them. We did this several years. Then the geese were dressed at Christmas time, which was really a job to do. We did about twenty geese." Anna went back after eighth grade and attended high school. "We learned some, she (the teacher) had four other grades so we did not get much help. We passed I guess!" "Then I stayed home to help my mother for a couple years while my sister, Emma, went to work. We raised strawberries and raspberries to sell. Then Emma came home and I went to work outside of our house. I worked one summer at a friend's home and received $2 a day. Then I had a chance to get a job in Appleton doing housework for a Doctor's home. |
