Includes NotesNotes for Joiette Marlene Haigh:

Joi lived in Goodland, Minnesota until she was about 2 1/2 years old. Her father didn't do too well at farming and I think that her mother wanted to move to the cities. They lived in an apartment on Nicollet and Lake street Ave So. until they moved to 3125 Lyndale Ave So.
She was baptized in 1941 by Pastor Youngdahl at Mount Olivet Lutheran church. She was Confirmed in 1944 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at Lake and 27th Ave. So. by Pastor Bartch. She was very active in the choir and youth group there until she met Dale Cardelli. While she was dating him, she started going to Christ Lutheran Church and became active teaching sunday school and sang in the choir. Bill Niebuhr was the choir director.

Joi went to Lyndale Elementary when she lived at 3125 Lyndale Ave. So.
Then her parents moved to 2634 29th Ave so and she went to Seward School.
After 8th grade the family moved to Laona, Wisconsin, where her parents had a resort with her Uncle Bill. Things didn't go well and they moved back to Minneapolis after just one year. There Joi went to South High School and graduated in June 1950.
She learned to play percussion in Laona from her blind music teacher. and that was one of the loves of her life. She loved to play drums. Especially the timpani. After high school she worked at the First National Bank in downtown Minneapolis where she did keypunching.

At 3125 Lyndale their next door neighbors were Ken and Evelyn Norris. They had two children, David and Susan. Evelyn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Flink lived upstairs of their house.

At 2634 29th Ave. So. Joi's best friends were Donna Howe, Marilyn Johnson, Joyce O'Donnell, and Winnie Hanson. There was a playground close and one of the things that they liked to do was play softball with the other kids.

When Joi was about 9 years old she liked to play with her hoop and stick and skip down the sidewalk singing away.

Phyllis and Joi loved to sing together. They would harmonize. Phyllis sang soprano and Joi alto. Phyllis played the piano and Joi the banjo.

When they were young they took lessons at the Citizen Club. They could have all the lessons they wanted for $1.00 a year. They both took tap lessons and Joi took banjo lessons.

During World War II a lot of Joi's cousins were in the service. They were usually shipped out from Minneapolis so their parents always opened their home to overnight guests and many of the cousins stayed there overnight.

When Charlie Carpenter had polio he was recuperating in Sister Kenny Institute on Chicago Ave. for quite a while. It was hard to go and visit him because the smell of the hospital was so pugnent. They used hot packs a lot on the patients to try to get their limbs to work again. When Chuck was able to be released as an out patient, he couldn't go home to Hibbing because he had to go back regularly to Sister Kenny's for treatments so he moved in at our house and stayed until he was through with his treatments and could go home.

"Set Free"

I know that I'm in God's own presence. He is so very good to me.
He loves me though I sinned so much, from Satan's grasp He sets me free.

He's been my Rock, He's been my Fortress. He's strong and firm and changes never.
I know He loves me with compassion; He'll be there for me now and forever.

He sent His Son for my forgiveness, Who came to die at Calvary.
And that is why I live in heaven. It was His grace that set me free.

- Joi Haigh Cardelli (written shortly before her death and sung by daughters Mary Bode and Barb Campeau)
