  Notes for ZACHARIAH S GIBSON:
In September, 1850 with brothers, Robert and Isaac, joined brothers William, James and John in California. The brothers decided that there was more money to be made driving cattle across the plains from Missouri to California than panning for gold. They made several such trips in the 1850's and a great deal of money.

1866--Brother William and his family arrived in Helena, Montana. I(John)Watt) had not seen him for six years--since he and Brother Zack left me at home in 1860 to care for father while they went back to California to look after the cattle. I had heard little from our ranch and our cattle in California, but was hardly prepared to learn that war times had been so bad there. From William I learned lawlessness prevailed in California and that our cattle had been shot and driven away and that long before the war was over William and Zack had nothing left but their families. They went to Idaho and mined awhile, and then on to Montana. While in Idaho, Brother James, who had escaped prison in St. Louis--and a death sentence also had managed to join them with his family. James and Zack had bought a drove of cattle and had them in another portion of Montana.

Notes for M
ATTHEW MOSS GIBSON:
Matthew M. Gibson was captured by Indians when he was a small child (probably three.) He lived with the Indians until he was grown, when he was identified by a birthmark and ransomed by his father. Family tradition states that he never became accustomed to living with his family, and would often be found outside the door listening and not entering the house. That he often returned to his Indian parents, staying awhile and then returning to his own parents. He later moved to Trenton, Grundy Co. MO. where he spent the remainder of his life.

From the history of Grundy Co. 1881

Dec. 3, 1844:Matthew Gibson wrote a letter to his family from Trenton, Grundy Co. MO asking about Sallie Ann Gibson and Isaac Hobbs, her husband. The Hobbs couple had traveled from Mo to Lee Co. Mo. Matthew indicated his family was well.
Matthew was one of the executors of his father's will. He seemed restless and often slipped around as he had learned to do with the Indians.
