1. JOHANN STEPHEN¹ GOSE, SR. was born Abt. 1738 in STRASBOURG, ALSACE - LORRAINE, GERMANY, and died Bef. August 10, 1799 in CRIPPLE CREEK, WYTHE COUNTY, VIRGINIA. He married (1) ANNA CATHARINA SPRACHER Abt. 1759 in LYNN TOWNSHIP, NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, daughter of JOHANN SPRACHER and MARIA BECK. He married (2) ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) SPRACHER Abt. 1778 in WYTHE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, daughter of JOHANN SPRACHER and MARIA BECK.

Notes for JOHANN STEPHEN GOSE, SR.:
Several books have been published over the past several years with reference to the immigrant Stephen Gose who arrived at the port of Philadelphia September 22, 1752 from Rotterdam, on the ship Brothers. Although some articles state that three other brothers immigrated to America, I can find no record of their names.

Several books that have been used as source data by various GOSE researchers over the years include, but are not limited to:

1. Annals of Tazewell County, John Newton Harman, Sr.
2. Early Adventures on the Western Waters, Vol III, Kegley
3. Gose Book 2nd edition, Thelma Pearl Yost
4. Pioneers of the Virginia Bluegrass, George B. Gose

While comparing the data listed in the above, as well as other family data provided by other GOSE family researchers, several discrepancies are found. Without discribing in detail the location of the various discrepancies, the following is offered as major areas that require further research and/or verification:

A review of above data indicates Steven was born in Alsase-Lorraine, Gemany in either 1719, 1738/1739, 1740 or 1745 and the following notes are offered:

1. He arrived in America at the age of 14 in 1752, which supports that he was born about 1738/1739.

2. He married Elizabeth, his second wife when he was 40, and after he arrived into what was then Montgomery Co Virginia about 1779, which also supports that he was born about 1738/1739.

3. He died in Wythe Co Virginia before August 10th, 1799 when his estate was appraised and he was about 60, which again supports the 1738/1739 date of birth.

4. He died in Wythe Co Virginia at the age of 80, which would tend to support the 1718/1719 date of birth.

5. Other data have him listed as being born in 1740 and 1745.

Pending further proof, I have elected to use the birth date of 1738/1739.

********************Marriages and Children*******************

Again, comparing the books and data provided by other GOSE family reserchers, it's confusing at best trying to determine the Mother and actual birth places of all the children. Some data have children born in Pennsylvania, after the family was supposed to have relocated to Rowan Co, North Carolina, while other data have children born to one wife, after he had married the other. Some questions that need documenting are:

1. Did Catherine, his first wife die in North Carolina or in Virginia, and when did she die?

2. If Stephen married Elizabeth, his second wife about 1779, did they marry in Rowan Co, North Carolina or in Montgomery Co Virginia?

3. Catherine, his first wife was the Mother of at least nine (9) of his children, and Elizabeth was the Mother of four (4) of his children. Reference is made to 15 children...does this include the two that died young? Did Elizabeth in fact bare eleven (11) children?

Stephen born in Germany immigrated to Phildelphia September 22, 1752 on the ship "Brothers." Stephen first resided in the Colonies in Linn Township, Northampton (Lehigh) County, Pa. He moved to Rowan County, North Carolina about 1764. He then located on the Zion Church Road in the Cripple Creek area of Montgomery (now Wythe) County, Virginia, about 1779.
Stephen and his eldest son Christopher appear on the Revolutionary War 1781 and 1782 lists of Captain Newell's Militia Company, Montgomery Co., VA13. Stephen died without a will, but his estate was appraised by John Stanger, David Buster, Adam Kittering (Kettering), and Stophel (Christopher) Spracher (Spraker) on August 10, 1799. At his death he had adjoining tracts of land totaling 302 acres located on Sugar Run between Zion Church and Christopher Spraker's land to the east. He also owned 100 acres on Elk Creek , surveyed in 1789.
Both of his wives were daughters of Christopher and Ernestine Spraker. He had eleven children with his first wife Catherine and four children with second wife Elizabeth.

I have Catherine Spracher, b. abt 1738, marr. bef 1759, d. abt 1809. I also have listed, a sister to Catherine......Anna Catharina, b. abt 1737, marr. to John Henry Shoaf abt 1760. This Anna d. abt 1807. Which one of us is correct? My info was obtained via birth and baptismal records, stating the mother and wife, as being simply Catherine........this could just be the name she went by, but..........

One of my notes is that I need to verify add'l facts on her. I have so much stuff I need to go back over and reverify. Can you send me the baptismal? I dont have any Shoafs listed all. According to one of Kegley's, he married Elizabeth when he was 40....which is still in doubt since no one knows for sure if he was born in 1719, 1738 or 1740. He MAY have married her abt 1779, which means that Catherine had to die before 1779. IF you look at the data in the LITZ book, you find the info and the dates you mention, but you also find that all the kids were were from Catherine. Still to many conflicting dates on this person.

"Stephen Gose came from the Rhine River area of Germany to the Fort Of Philadelphia on September 22, 1752, departing from Rotterdam, Holland when he was 15 years old. His descendents came to Burkes Garden in Tazewell County, Virginia and eventually moved to Russell County. They bought land in Russell County in 1799. He had 13 children."

Notes for Catherine Gose:

She was one of fifteen children. Her and George were married by the Rev. John Stanger in Montgomery County, Virginia. She was one of the first to be buried in the Kisling-Keesling Cemetery on Cedar Springs Farm, Cedar Springs, Smyth Co., Va. Her and George are buried side by side with matching head stones, the two oldest stones in the Cemetery and both with the spelling of KISLING.
The first five children of George and Catharine seem to have been born near the mouth of Cripple Creek in the Lead Mine area of Wythe Co. The last three are thought to have been born at Cedar Springs. All children except Peter, were recorded as Baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church on Cripple Creek. An entry from the Wythe County Court Order Books recorded Nov. 13, 1810 states that the overseers of the poor bound out Gertrude Rosenbaum, orphan, to George Keesling.

Notes for George Kisling, Jr.:
German surname spelling: "Ki�ling"; other various spellings: "Keesler, Keesley, Keesling, Keisling,and Kissling." was the first born of Johann Georg (George, Sr.)
and Anna Maria Kisling in 1759 near Reading, Berks Co., Pa. He died at Cedar Springs Farm on 19 MAR 1840, while living out his final years with his oldest son Peter, who inherited the house and farm.
George served in the American Revolutionary War in the Continental Army in Capt. Kemp's Company and in Capt. Landich's Company under command of Col. Ely, Battalion Commander. George, along with his younger brother, Conrad, and first cousins, Martin and John, have all been proven to have served in the Revolution.
After the war, George came to Virginia around 1787 with his brother Conrad. His father and family had already settled there the year before. He inherited most of his father's farm and property in 1788. On 9 Nov. 1790, he purchased 190 acres on both sides of both forks of Mill Creek, a branch of the New River. On 13 Dec. 1796, George purchased 110 acres on Peek Creek from James and Florence Patton. On 14 May 1799, George purchased 37 acres from his brother-in-law
and sister, Jacob and Phobe. On July 10, 1802, he purchased 363 acres in two tracts on Cripple Creek from Charles and Sarah Buster. This was the beginning of the Keeslings' farm, saw mill and store at Cedar Springs, Virginia. The 1815 Virginia Tax Assessment showed him living on a 296 acre farm on the head waters of Cripple Creek. The farm consisted of a two story log home, 30 ft. by 24 ft., a barn, a barn house, loom house, spring house, meat house and three other old houses all made of logs. The total assessed value of this farm was $2000. This house still stands today with added wings, chimneys and porches. The main share of his estate was sold or granted to his children before his death. He might have seen all the drawn out hassle over his brother, Conrad's Will, and decided to divide up his estate before he died. Maybe, he was one of the first Americans to figure out how to dodge Inheritance Tax.
Although, George and Catharine used the spelling KISLING, some of their children and descendants used the spelling KEESLING from early 1800's to this day. According to most Translators, KISLING (KI�LING) is the German spelling; but pronounced "KEY-SEL-ING". Those children that moved West, kept the German spelling with the English pronunciation (KISLING), although some western descendants use KEISLING. Those who stayed in Southwest Virginia, chose the German pronunciation with English spelling. Another trait of our German ancestors was to record the "saint" name first; as you will see on many Lutheran Babtismal records and other documentation written in German.

When a little girl, Elizabeth, upon going to the spring after a bucket of water, saw Indians hiding behind an old root head, but thinking she would be laughed at, did not mention it to the older folks at the house. If she had, in all probability, the Sluss family would not have been massacred, which occurred in a short while. Elizabeth Spangler was one of five sisters - four marrying and settling in Burke's Garden. One married George Spracher, one Matthias Fox, one George Rhudy, and Elizabeth married Philip Gose. MARRIED BY THE REV JOHN STANGER
There was some romance in connection with their moving into Burke's Garden. Mrs. Gose did not want to make the change, but her husband told her to come over with him and if she did not say it was pretty, he would not ask her to move. He waited until about the first of June when the valley was a mass of flowers before bringing his wife there. She, of course, had to admit that it was beautiful. About 1799 they located on the north side of Burke's Garden near where John P. Gose now resides. They selected this cove facing south, fair to the sun and sheltered from the northwest winds, which is one of the most beautiful locations in the Garden. Mrs. Gose was an educated woman, as evidenced by the books now in possession of her grandson, John P. Gose. For years she was the only doctor in that section, and often made trips across the mountain to Wolf Creek. She was followed one night by a panther which leaped onto her horse's back, but she was able to escape unharmed.

German surname spelling: "Ki�ling"; other various spellings: "Keesler, Keesley, Keisling, Kiesling and Kissling." Bapt. 17 SEP 1780, at Zion Luthern Church, Richmond Township,Berks Co.,Pa. She was sponsored by her Aunt and Uncle, Jacob and Waldburga Kissling.
The Marriage records show her as Susanna Cesling and her husband as Jacob Gost. Both are buried in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, but their headstones are too deteriorated to record exact dates. Rosanna died sometime after Jacob, as she is mentioned in his will.
