SEBASTIAN
BOHN (This entry "Sebastian Bohn" was already written in English)
Christian Bohn passed away on August 28,
1845, The Bohn family started for America shortly after that. There is a
Elizabeth Bohn in the 1870 census of Zanesville, Ohio, being 74 years old
living at the same household as Sebastian Bohn & Theresa. I think this is
possibly Christian Bohn's wife. I have an old picture that I had copied, on the
back of the original it reads, "Henry Bohn's grandmother Bohn" I
think this may be Elizabeth.
Notes
for Elizabeth?:
If
Elizabeth is the mother of the children written in the old Bible she would have
been about 44 years of age at the birth of her last child Stegser? Bohn born
December 19, 1840.

Sebastian Bohn was a native of Baden,
Germany, and took part in the German rebellion in 1848. The army to which he
belonged, however, was unable to win the liberties for which they were fighting
and Sebastian made his escape to Switzerland and in 1854 crossed the Atlantic
to America, continuing his journey into the interior of the country until he
had reached Zanesville. He then accepted a position as brewer with J. Gobel.
Later he established a brewery of his own, beginning the business in 1860 and
continuing until his death, which occurred on March 29, 1892. He was very
successful in his business affairs and accumulated a large competency. He held
membership in the Catholic church, was a member of St. Nicholas Society and
gave his political allegiance to the democracy.
He married Miss Theresa Gruber, who was born
in Baden, Germany, and died in 1885, at the age of 57 years. She too, was a
communicant of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She gave her hand in marriage to
Sebastian while they were still residents of the fatherland and they became the
parents of 7 children, but only one son and one daughter reached mature years.

August Bohn, who is engaged in the brewing
business in Zanesville, was born in Somerset, Perry County, Ohio, in 1858. He
was educated in the common schools, wherein he continued his studies until
fifteen years of age, when he put aside his textbooks in order to enter the
brewery. He took charge of the business and upon his father's death succeeded
him in the ownership. Under his guidance the business has steadily increased
and he has made many improvements in the plant, adding all the latest
facilities that would prove of practical benefit in the manufacture and care of
beer. The plant is situated on East Marietta Street and the product is
practically sold to the local trade. In the winter of 1905 Mr. Bohn erected a
large addition to his building and this enabled him to increase his output from
six to ten thousand barrels annually.
Mr. Bohn is a communicant of the St. Nicholas
Catholic Church and in his political views is a democrat. His attention has
been largely concentrated on his business affairs and although he entered upon an
enterprise already established he has displayed marked executive force and
business discernment in enlarging and successfully controlling this.

A
HERO'S DEATH, CHARLIE BOHN DROWNED AT COLUMBUS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, WHILE
ATTEMPTING TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A FRIEND - THE PARTICULARS OF THE SAD ACCIDENT.
Yesterday afternoon about a quarter after
four o'clock, Charlie Bohn, aged sixteen years, son of Charles Bohn, a
shoemaker who resides on Underwood Street, near Spring, was drowned in Alum
Creek, near Columbus. Charles with five other boys, ranging in age from twelve
to eighteen years, went out to Nelson's Dam to bathe. It seems that none of the
lads could swim, and the water at that point is very deep. John H. Ege and
Charlie were anxious to learn the art of floating on the water, and they were
advised to dive from the dam, a suggestion both accepted. Bohn lead the way,
and flinging himself into the deep water, rose to the surface half strangled,
and succeeded in reaching the bank with great difficulty. The Ege boy followed, and the moment he came
to the surface he began to struggle and call for help. The boys on the bank called to Bohn to go to
his assistance. Charlie hesitated,
fearing that he could be of no service, but the cries of the drowning lad
finally induced him to make the attempt, and he threw himself forward into the
water again. Ege grabbed his rescuer
about the neck, and the lads struggled together in the water, and then went to
the bottom. Their companions are unable
to say whether they came up again or not.
The other boys gave the alarm, and in about half an hour the two lads
were brought to surface, locked in each others arms. They went down in about twelve feet of water.
Charlie Bohn had gone to Columbus to learn
the trade of a Barber, and was in the employ of Henry Bausch. The point at which the boys were drowned is
considered a very dangerous place.

BOHN
STEPS DOWN AS INSPECTOR
Today a heavy set man with an ever-present
twinkle in his eye sits at home with thoughts of the last 57 years filling his
mind.
His hair is only slightly more gray than it
was 15 years ago when he was writing magazine article after magazine article as
Zanesville's fighting Plumbing Inspector. The twinkle and his smile are
unchanged.
He is Henry Bohn, 1113 Greenwood Avenue.
Bohn, now past 74, is stepping down Dec. 31
from the job he has held for 26 years, Plumbing Inspector, the only one
Zanesville has ever had.
His career extends far back before he became
inspector. For 57 years he has been a plumber in Zanesville, his native city.
For about 4 years he was an apprentice, then for about 26 years he was in the
plumbing business privately, and now for about 26 years he has been in the
plumbing business for the city of Zanesville.
During that time he has waged a continuous
fight for more sanitation in Zanesville. He believed in fighting if necessary,
and got results.
Although he didn't hesitate to condemn whole
city streets if he thought their conditions were unhealthful, he has still been
untouched by political campaigns and changes in administration.
Today at 74, he has definitely decided to
give up the position of Plumbing Inspector he not only created but upheld for
more than a quarter of a century.
Poor health is finally forcing retirement on
Henry Bohn.
My
great-grandfather Henry Bohn died at my grandfather's house on Pleasant Grove
Rd. My grandmother Ora who was a nurse kept care of him while he was sick. She
said he died in my grandfathers bed. He had Throat Cancer. Henry smoked cigars
for years, maybe this was the reason he had throat Cancer.

Note
by Phillip S. Bohn:
My Great-Aunt Edna, I never got to see her a
lot, only when she came to visit us here in Zanesville, Ohio. Her sister, Mary
Rose and Mary's husband, Roy Gallagher would always come here together since
they both lived in Atlanta, Georgia.
I remember her as being very nice lady and
having a good sense of humor. The last time she and her sister Mary and Roy
last visited us here in Zanesville was about 1976.
I always remembered the last time when they
were here because the neighbor boy who was only about 7 or 8 was riding my
youngest brother's plastic "Big-Wheel", when he done some business in
his pants and sat down and started to ride that thing. He made several passes
by the visiting relatives and they caught a waft and everybody decided to come
inside. They were laughing trying not to be too loud as they were looking
outside the kitchen window, wondering how that little boy can ride that thing
like nothing is wrong.
Before she died she desired cremation like
her husband Parker, and was buried here in Zanesville, Ohio in Mt. Olive
Cemetery. She was sent here U. P. S. so my uncle Charlie J. Bohn was chosen to
do the honors to give her a proper burial. Great Aunt Edna sat on Uncle
Charlie's piano for a short time.

Personalities
- LAST OF A DYING BREED
For a generation of Atlanta Constitution
Reporters, new on the job, treading on eggs in the garrulity of the newsroom
and fearing anything that moved faster than a copy boy, H. Parker Lowell
provided two things: their first sulfuric encounter with the precision of the
copy desk, and a gruff but understanding shoulder to cry on when things got
hard.
Today, H. Parker Lowell, as he is known to
friends from the courthouse janitorial staff to the governor, provides the same
gruff exterior and same soggy heart to a generation of kids learning to
flounder for their lifes in the downtown Y.M.C.A. pool. He is a modern-day
Macawber, a W. C. Fields without jug, as venerable as an elephant and tough of
skin as a rhino, with a heart as big as the Rock Candy Mountain.
Not long ago a newspaper reporter inveigled
the elderly Atlanta gentleman to a desk on the edge of The Constitution
newsroom. The interview netted the reporter but little information not already
in public domain, and it was interrupted fifteen times by a picturesque tribal
rite known as Ignoring the Old Goat.
The pattern of this folk ceremony, unvarying
and apparently immutable, had certain studied and precise rhythm.
Each approaching person, upon seeing H.
Parker Lowell, would stagger backward, shake his head in horror and disbelief,
and croak: "The old goat !"
Whereupon Mr. Lowell would, with a grimace of
profound distaste, rise from his chair and extend a long, bony suntanned hand.
Instead of shaking hands, however, the parties would gingerly brush palms,
wince, draw back their hands and fastidiously wipe them on coat sleeves,
trouser legs or pocket handkerchiefs. Then, having graphically expressed mutual
loathing and revulsion, they would smile broadly, thrust out their hands again,
this time their palms met in a brushing handclasp and they bellowed in unison:
"How are you, you old S.O.B. !"
The object of and willing participant in this
little exercise, the incomparable Mr. Lowell, is a self-styled "old
goat" who achieved recent fame at the age of seventy-six years by swimming
his 1'000th mile in the Y.M.C.A. pool, between organizing and directing a
strenuous schedule of swimming classes and serving as "dean of women"
to the Y's female group, the Magnificent Mermaids.
Long before he came into the public eye with
his name and picture in far flung newspapers, H. Parker Lowell, scion of the
Lowells of Boston ("We're the poor but very impoverished branch," he
non sequiturs proudly), has been a mote in the eye of many people.
He was known to women on his street out near
Brookwood station as the loony fellow who encouraged kids to play with snakes
and even had some in his garage on occasion for study by Boy Scouts and other nature lovers. Firebugs
who happened to read The Georgia Firecracker, published during the regime of
Zack D. Cravey, know him as the the author of such lyrical admonitions as:
"Keep
the home fires burning but please keep them guarded
From children both normal and slightly
retarded.
Keep matches from children and children from
matches.
Remember that fire too easily catches."
he is also the artist who once portrayed Red
Riding Hood as a bucktoothed, simple-minded damsel who wasted a Talmadge ham on
a beast in a nightcap. The caption:
"We
try to view Red Riding Hood
With sympathy impartial
But she would not be very good
As a Junior Fire Marshall.
Could she a fire hazard spot
In any nook or cranny
If that poor April fool could not
Distinguish wolf from granny?"
Mr. Lowell has caricatured scores of sober
citizens in his zany pen and ink sketches and poked punny fun at others in his
faintly Ogden Nashian doggerel. He is the founding father of an obscure and
purposely non-useful fraternity called Sigma Omicron Beta, to which scores of
newspapermen belong, including the Washington music critic who panned Margaret
Truman's singing. (Somebody brought up President Truman's name for membership
but the brothers voted him down as not so promising an S.O.B. as reporter who
provoked presidential ire.) The S.O.B. membership card, designed and
distributed by Mr. Lowell, shows the rear elevation of a horse and that first
ritual pass at a handshake, the limp, clammy one, is known as "the S.O.B.
grip."
World War II is responsible for the presence
of H. Parker Lowell in Atlanta. He came from newspapers in Illinois, Ohio and
Iowa by way of a depression-days stint in a CCC camp, where he wrote and
illustrated training manuals. He came to work for Bell Aircraft in Marietta in
1943 as a writer and stayed to edit copy and write heads for The Constitution,
to preach fire prevention, to teach water safety and to heckle and lampoon his
way into the hearts of endless numbers of unwary citizens.
Like a proper Lowell - Parker is a distant
kinsman of that other well known poet, James Russell Lowell. He came from
Massachusetts. He was born just outside Boston in the little town of Somerville
on December 31, 1887. He played hooky his way through Somerville Latin School,
cutting out and going swimming in the river when he was supposed to be in art
class, and then he went to Northwestern University. Northwestern gave him a
degree in 1910 - "much to everybody's surprise," he says.
Mr. Lowell now attributes the vigor of his
70's to moderation.
"I never smoked, drank or studied to
excess," he says.
He says of his athletic career that he
"tried to play football but was soon cured of that" and he went out
for track, "where I distinguished myself by finishing the mile the same
afternoon I started." He was an active and enthusiastic member of the S A
E fraternity, however, and still takes an interest in fraternity affairs,
serving as vice president of the Atlanta alumni group.
The habit of volunteering for things first
took hold of Mr. Lowell when he was a young reporter on the Des Moines
Register. He worked the Police Beat, served as assistant sports editor and on
his own time coached, for free, at Des Moines Collage. It was such a happy
experience for him he has felt uneasy since if he wasn't spending part of his
time in some form of community service. When he first came to Atlanta he
organized a Boy Scout troop, Not long ago he was honored by the Red Cross for
forty years' service in water safety.
When World War II ended and the H. Parker
Lowell drawings and poems were no longer needed for the Bell Aircraft News and
the Bell Ringer Magazine, Parker moved to the copy desk of the Constitution
where he was enthusiastically received. He attributes that enthusiasm to the
fact that he had just undergone surgery for the removal of a pair of tumors
from his larynx and was literally speechless at the time.
To fill the gap before he got his new voice -
the hoarse and whispery baritone which he now has - he heckled his colleagues,
his employers and random readers with his pictures and verses. By the time he
reached retirement age in 1954 it was inconceivable to his colleagues that
"the old goat" could be peacefully pastured out in the newspaper
reference room, his mirthful butting stilled.
They were right. Parker accepted a quiet
berth in the newspaper library and presumably settled down to putter through
clippings and files to a serene old age. But he hated every minute of it and
one day he reared and pitched out of the cushiony retirement berth into a
variety of freelance jobs, culminating in the post as swimming instructor at
the Y.M.C.A.
"They said they wanted an older man to
take charge of swimming on the family night," he explained. "They
couldn't find anybody older than me."
He stayed on to teach children, to organize a
women's group and the Y's Old Goats Club for men over fifty. (Motto: Nifty at
Fifty, Better at Sixty. While Alive, Let's Stay Alive.) He credits his wife,
Edna, with making it possible for him to put in a full day of work at the pool
and return at night for his special classes.
"Some wives let their husbands have an
occasional night out with the boys," Parker says, "Edna lets me have
every Wednesday night out with the girls."
His girls are the Magnificent Mermaids he
taught to swim and immortalized thus:
"To
swim at the 'Y' with my mermaids I'd ruther
Than view Mona Lisa or Whistler's
Mother."
Parker has one daughter by a previous
marriage and one grandchild, a young man who was graduated from the U. S. Naval
Academy this June. But he has countless youthful friends who are indebted to
him for swimming lessons or for happy excursions into the woods which once
encircled his house and abounded in interesting plants and wildlife.
His close friend, the late poet laureate of
Georgia, Ollie Reeves, once explained Parker's enduring youth by saying,
"He's a man of so many talents and interests that life for him begins anew
each day." - Celestine Sibley

BITS
OF ZANESVILLE BIOGRAPHY
(with
picture)
By
Thomas W. Lewis
Frederick Andrew Bohn, of the firm of Bohn
& Kern, located on South 3rd Street, has been a lifelong resident of
Zanesville and active not only in the plumbing and heating lines, but as a
public official.
He was born in the old Third ward, in this
city, November 21, 1868, his parents being Frederick J. and Mary W. Bohn. The
latter still survives. After attending the St. Nicholas school for several
years he started to work at the rolling mill of the old Ohio Iron Company of
this city, after which he learned the plumbing and heating trade with the
Roekel Plumbing Company.
As a member of the firm of Bohn Bros. &
Kern, Mr. Bohn took an active part (1892) in purchasing the plumbing and heating
business of Charles Haas, then located at 715 Main Street. For a considerable
period Bohn Bros. & Kern executed
contracts in many parts of Ohio, but of late years their activities have been
confined to Zanesville and nearby counties.
Among the large and important jobs carried to
a successful and satisfactory end by the firm was installing the plumbing and
heating apparatus in the then new addition to St. Aloyislus Academy at New
Lexington, a work so extensive that nearly a year was consumed in the process.
In addition to their plumbing and heating
activities the firm specializes in the manufacture of water softeners, hard
water tank heaters and pipe repair couplers. They are also agents for both over
and under-feed automatic coal burning stokers and automatic humidifiers.
The foregoing particulars indicate the great
scope of Mr. Bohn's daily activities and they also indicate the fullness of his
practical knowledge of the business he has so successfully mastered.
Mr. Bohn was elected city councilman in 1903
and such was the acceptability of his services that re-elections occurred which
kept him a member of that body until 1910.
While a member of council Mr. Bohn was
instrumental in having constructed that great improvement, the 9th street
retaining wall at the base of Pioneer Park and the paving of the street itself,
a thoroughfare which had previously been a mud hole between Main and Marietta
streets. The present garbage plant was installed during his term in council.
Among Mr. Bohn's other important activities
are those incident to his being a member of the city board of review and a
director of the Chamber of Commerce.
In July 15, 1891, Mr. Bohn was married to
Miss Mary L. Eschman of Zanesville, Ohio, and they became parents of the
following children: Helena, who died in infancy and Fred L., managing editor of
the Zanesville Signal. Mr. Bohn senior, is an Eagle, a Knight of Columbus and
an Elk, of the last-named lodge he is a trustee.

From
the book, "Investigating Our
Heritage"
By
Dorothy (Aitken) Bohn, 1978
Frederick A. "Fisher" Bohn was born
in the old Third Ward (Underwood Street) in Zanesville, Ohio, November 21,
1868.
Some time in years he was employed in
lighting the gas street lamps, using a ladder to do so.
He used a ladder again, this time carrying an
oil can, to grease the trolley line wheels. Later he would invent a self-oiling
trolley line wheel which was soon copied by established manufacturers.
In July 1891 at the age of 23, Fisher married
Mary Louis "Molly" Eschman 22, in Zanesville, Ohio. The following
year with Joseph & Kern, he purchased the plumbing and heating business of
Charles Haas, then located at 715 Main Street.
The first job of the new firm known as Bohn
& Kern was to install a water line to 1539 May Street, a house later
acquired by George and Elizabeth Aitken. Fisher dug the ditch for this by hand.
(This house has a third claim to distinction. Howard Chandler Christy, later
famous as artist and illustrator, rented a room there as a young man).
At about the same time Fisher went into partnership with Joseph
Kern, he became a partner in the Dockray Brass and Iron Company with Henry B.,
Dockray and Louis Wise. (Fisher's son would bear the middle name of
"Louis" from this latter partner). He early disposed of his interests
in the Dockray Company to devote his attention to Bohn & Kern.
Another major business venture came in 1911
with the purchase on borrowed money of the Sixth Street bridge just before it
was torn down. He immediately sold it to a junk dealer. Among his effects is a
receipted 30-day bank note for $3,700.00 for which his mother Mary signed as
chief guarantor.
Early in his business career he moved Bohn
& Kern to 34-36 South Third Street. In 1938 his son Fred L. joined him in
the business which had been founded 45 years ago. (At the time of this writing
1978).
At the time Fred L. joined him, in addition
to the plumbing and heating activities, he specialized in the manufacture of
water softeners, water tank heaters and pipe repair couplers.
Fisher designed numerous items for the
plumbing business and turned out fine work on the lathe. He designed a water
softener with an up-flow, when others were making down-flow, and his design
Later became standard for the major manufacturer of this item. He developed
pneumatic water systems for rural areas as well as other supplies.
In 1926, Joseph Kern became ill and sold his
interest to his partner. Fisher added stokers and their installation, furnaces
and the sale of air conditioners. He enlarged his business to become a general
plumbing and supply company to serve both wholesalers. He purchased a larger
building at 54 South Third Street (a former mule barn) and moved his business
into it. Later he bought two apartment buildings, one on South Street and one
on the corner of South and Third Streets. After his son joined him he bought a
commercial garage next to 54 South Third Street and thus owned one-quarter block
of land and buildings.
At seventy years of age he had a near-fatal
bout with pneumonia, and it was then he turned to his son Fred L. to invite him
to join the business firm.

FRED
L. BOHN DIES; DEMOCRATIC LEADER
When Fred L. Bohn was managing editor of the
old Zanesville Signal, his voice would boom out in the newsroom: "GET IT
FIRST, BUT FIRST GET IT RIGHT!"
Since those days Fred L. Bohn's voice was
heard in many high places in the nation as his distinguished career carried him
to the top office in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in the United
States.
A leader in affairs of the Democratic party,
he was one politician who was completely honest in dealing with his fellow men.
At 3:05 a.m. Friday June 6, Fred Bohn died at
Good Samaritan Hospital where he was admitted Tuesday. He was 67 years old and
resided at 2990 Fairway lane.
The body is at Blue avenue Chapel of Bolin
Funeral Home where friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Sunday. The Rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. Sunday. Elks Lodge will
hold services Sunday evening.
Requiem high mass will be celebrated at 10
a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and burial will be in Mt. Olive
Cemetery.
Mr. Bohn, a lifelong Democrat, was a past
chairman of the Muskingum County Executive Committee and a former chairman of
the Muskingum County Board of Elections.
He served as State Finance Chairman for John
Glenn during the brief entry into politics of America's first astronaut to
orbit the earth. Glenn had announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate but was
forced to withdraw after suffering a fall in his apartment.
Mr. Bohn at one time served as managing
editor of the old Zanesville, Signal, leaving that post in 1938 to join his
father in the Bohn & Kern plumbing business on South Third street which he
was operating at the time of his death.
A native of Zanesville, Mr. Bohn was born May
8,1902, the only son of the late Fred A. and Mary (Eschmann) Bohn.
He received his early education at St.
Nicholas Parochial School and was graduated from Zanesville High School in
1920. He later attended Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, and Ohio State University. Then he joined the
staff of the Signal as a reporter. His advancement in the newspaper field was
steady and he served as sports editor, and ultimately managing editor,
succeeding the late Joseph R. Downs.
Mr. Bohn served in the various chairs of the
Local Elks Lodge and was elected Exalted Ruler in 1928. Five years later he was
elected president of the Ohio Elks Association and in 1956 he was named Grand
Exalted Ruler at the Lodge's annual convention in Chicago. The top job in
Elkdom required Mr. Bohn to travel more than 100,000 miles making official
visits to virtually every state in the union.
During his term as head of the lodge, the
organization inaugurated the promotion of a campaign for Juvenile Decency as
opposed to Juvenile Delinquency, a program which met with marked success.
In addition to his affiliation with the Elks
he was a past president of the Rotary, member of the Zanesville Country Club, a
Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Zanesville
Area Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Muskingum Motor Club, director and
past president of the Muskingum County Tuberculosis and Health Association and
served on the advisory committee at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Mr. Bohn also belonged to St. Nicholas
Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge, American Legion, the Ohio Democratic Club
and was a member-at-large of the National Council of Boy Scouts. He was also a
former member of the Ohio Advisory Council of the Small Business
Administration.
He was active in any number of civic affairs,
assisting in the organization of the Schoolboy Patrol, Industrial Foundation,
Milk Fund, Crippled Children's Committee and Little Theater Guild. He also
served as chairman of the Community and
War Chest campaigns during World War II.
Surviving are his widow, the former Dorothy
Aitken; three daughters, Mrs. (Mary Beth) R. Thomas Koechlin of Jacksonville,
Fla.; Mrs. (Martha) John Gallahue of New York City and Mrs. (Rosemary) Michael
Mullen of Honolulu; seven grandchildren; and a number of cousins.

Becky's
story, growing up with her father
As
you all know, my dad went on his wonderful journey home. I had written something about his life that I
was going to read at the funeral. I knew
that I wouldn't be able to make it when it came to reading it, so I would like
to share it with you now.
My
dad passed away on August 23,2004. Many
of you don't know this, but this was also my Grandpa Bohn's birthday. It's funny how God seems to pick a special
day to bring someone home. On the day
before my dad died, I was finally inspired to write about his life. I had put it off for a long time, but for
some reason that only God knows, the stories just started running through my
mind. I think this is another one of
God's plans.
Here
is the story.
Growing
up with a dad like mine, was one of the best childhoods that a daughter could
ask for. I think about some of the wonderful memories that he gave to us.
We've
been on vacations to see places a child would love to see. We've been to Disney World, Hershey PA, trips
to see family and friends, and a trip to the beautiful backwoods of Canada.
I
have memories from high school, where everyone knew my dad as a fun dad to be
around. We didn't have buses to take us
to basketball games, track meets, and some of the other events at school. It was a small group of parents that would
always volunteer to be our chauffers.
When my dad was available to drive, we always had a car full of giggling
teenagers. He would laugh and joke with
us, just like he was a teenager himself.
I still keep in touch with some of my friends from high school, and when
would reminisce, the subject of my dad would always come up. There would be memories to share and a giggle
or two when they would think about some of his jokes and the smile he always
had on his face.
Dad
also had a commitment to his family and was always willing to do anything when
the needed help with a project of just someone to talk to. As a brother, son, father and husband, you
couldn't ask for a better person. I can
only hope I can be half the person that he was.
