Notes from Kim Hudson Shumate, April 23, 03:

From Karen Worley's site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~krworley/index.htm:

Karen,
I do see him listed in "Brunswick Troops in North America 1776-1783, An
Index of All Soldiers Who Remained in North America" by Claus Reuter. He was
born in Ohlenrode, Brunswick, Germany in 1760 was captured at the Surrender
of Saratoga, NY, POW, deserted the German Army in Virginia, last known
accounted for on August 1, 1779 when he deserted . He served in the
Leibcompany of von Barner. He died between 1830 and 1840 at Ashe; (not in census after 1830).

There is an IGI on Frederick Sever b abt 1754 Muhlenberg, Ky file # 1760896. No other info. Per Dan Murphy, a descendant, there were multiple Frederick Severts. This one married somebody else and stayed in Ky.

From the files of Eleanor Baker Reeves at the Ashe library, there was a letter dated 1975 to Mrs Reeves from a "Monte". The librarian was almost positive that this was Monte Ann DeBoard, who is the libraian's cousin. In the letter Monte says she spoke with Mae Severt. Per Mae, "Frederick Severt was a hired Hessian soldier who fought with Cornwallis. He deserted and fled to the Dismal Swamp, where he became lost for 2-3 weeks, nearly starving to death. He eventually found his way out, traveled across Va, marrying a Poole woman somewhere along the way. He eventually settled in Ashe Co and had 3 children. Mae is descended from his son John, Caroline from Frederick Jr. Mae said that Barbara married Capt John Miller, from whom Dr Edward Miller is descended, but I found a marriage record that shows she married an Eli Bare in 1844."

According to Mae Severt, a descendant (quoted by Monte Deboard in the E.B. Reeves papers), "Frederick Severt was a hired Hessian soldier who fought with Cornwallis. He fled to the Dismal Swamp where he became lost for 2-3 weeks, nearly starving to death. He eventually found his way out, traveled across VA, marrying a Poole woman somewhere along the way. He eventually settled in Ashe County and had three children. Mae is descended from his son John. ".

There is an entry in The Heritage Book of Ashe County Volume I, page 439, I believe is this Frederick (estimated date of birth correlates). It goes into detail about Frederick Severt Jr. and his descendants.

From Dr. Paul Purdom's compilation of Fredric (Fredrich), Severt (Sievers) (Sieford), born on 1759 at Oldenrode Brunswick - Luenburg, Germany, Aug. 15, 2000.
Deserted on 1779 at Virginia. Frederick Seaford lived in Ashe County, North Carolina in 1790, (# 026). Family tradition says he was a Hessian deserter. Details assume match with data from Brunswick Deserters - Immigrants of the American Revolution 1973, Clifford Neal Smith. When he deserted, he came to a deep stream, but could not swim. Therefore he cut a stick that came up to his chin and used it to ensure that he did not go over his head. While he was drying his clothes, his commanding officer came up, but he was able to break the officer's sword with his stick and continue on his way.
