Sarah Jane Lokey Hamer Whatley wrote in her journal about visits with her mother-in-law, "Mother Hamer." She also wrote about her death. On November 14, 1884, she wrote, "Mother Hamer died with dropsy." (Note by E. Boland Mary Cummings Hamer is buried in the Old Parker/Hamer Cemetery just north of Columbus, Ga. on the River Road)

Notes for Seth Gaines Hamer:

Seth Gaines Hamer was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina on March 06, 1816. Seth left S C. when he was of age, and rode his own horse to Georgia to visit his brother John Gainus Hamer. While there he fell in love with John's wife's sister Martha Jane Cummings and married her. He did not return to South Carolina to live. His descendants live mostly in and around Troup County, Ga. In West Point and LeGrange, Ga. [John Hamer Bladen County, N.C..FTW]

Sarah Jane Lokey Hamer (Whatley) wrote in her journal on August 29, 1882, "I went to Uncle Seth Hamers." On November 23, 1886, she wrote, "I went to Uncle Seth Hamer's burrial and funeral his children was all there." Based on those statements, I believe that Seth Hamer was her first husband's uncle, which would make him John Ganius Hamer's brother. They were born two years apart in SC.
