AMES P. BOLAND:
He came to America with his parents in 1851,settling in Lemonster, Mass. where the family resided until 1861, when they came west and settled in Highland township, Clayton County.
Joe Boland, grandson of James, has a copy of a diary that James wrote daily entries in every day from 1878 - 1884. Joe found the entry for the day his father (Thomas E. Boland) was born.
It reads, "A son was born unto me at 12 AM. Dr. Purdy attending. All is well that ends well." Then on October 31th, he adds, "Thomas Edward baptized."

Mary Clipper's last name was originally spelled "Klopper or Kloepper". Her father was born in Prussia.
She was born at Garnavillo, Iowa, the daughter of Gerhardt and Maria Clipper. She married James Boland in Garnavillo on June 1, 1873. They began housekeeping on the home farm six miles west of Elkader on highway 56 and this has been their home for the past 70 years.

  ii.   MARGARET AGNES BOLAND, b. October 22, 1875; d. July 28, 1940.
  Notes for MARGARET AGNES BOLAND:
Margaret Boland was my Godmother and I don't remember very much about her as she died when I was still quite young. She was a school teacher and was well liked.
I remember she came to our house and helped do the cooking when I was younger--may have been when my brother Luke was born on the McDermott Place. I remember she made Johnny-cake and my brother George and I ate too much Johnny-cake and I got sick and have not eaten Johnny-cake since.

7. iii.   MAME ANN BOLAND, b. September 01, 1877; d. October 22, 1973.
  iv.   JOHNATHAN H. BOLAND, b. February 14, 1879; d. January 15, 1964.
  Notes for JOHNATHAN H. BOLAND:
John Boland spent quite a bit of his life in Minnesota. He worked in St Paul for a number of years at the Griffin Wheel Works on the Eastern edge of St Paul. The eastern edge at the time was at Johnson Parkway--today the edge of the city goes out another 4-8 miles. Building is going so quickly it is almost all built up between St Paul and Hudson, Wisconsin and Stillwater, Minnesota--both are 15 - 17 miles away.
I am not sure when he purchased a piece of land in northern Minnesota at a very small town called, Tobique, between Walker and grand Rapids. The town had a store/post office, gas station and a small church--that was the whole town. He had a log cabin on Clear Lake along with his friend Chris _______. He fished, hunted and grew some vegetables and lived off the land. He told us when his deer meat got low he would shoot a deer and can it until it ran out again. He also feed the deer, so they came to feed.
He moved to Elkader in the late 40's and lived with tom and Mary Boland until his death. He liked to go downstairs to the tavern and play Euchre every morning and afternoon. He always had a tooth pick in his mouth for some reason. When anyone from the family came to visit--he would pull out some quarters and give each child a quarter. My cousin, Kenny and Jimmy would call him their "Uncle Two-Bits". He was a very kind and gentle man--never seen him get angry. He had a very unique way of eating his peas with a knife--he literally got the peas on his knife and balanced them and into his mouth--it was quite a site to see.
John was a very handsome young man and a good looking older man. I used to ask sister Martha, his sister to tell us a little about him after he dies and she would not share any stories about him. So I guess he has some mysteries about him that we will never know. Ha!

Notes for J
OHN LAWRENCE BOLAND:
Born in Massachusetts, John Boland came to Iowa with his parents in 1861. He lived in Highland Township until he was "murdered" on November 5, 1906. In 1878 he married Jane Orr who died about two years before John's murder.

[From his obituary... ]
He leaves six children; James, John, William, Clement, Fred, and Agnes. Deceased was a quiet, peaceable man, respected for his many good qualities. He had his faults like all of us but nevertheless, he was a good person. All regret his untimely death. Funeral was Wed. morning at St. Joseph's church. May God have mercy on him.

Footnote: The newspaper account (of which I have a copy) of John's murder has the headline, "Shocking Murder in Clayton Co.". The article describes John as "a wealthy farmer" who was popular in Clayton county, having many friends. Ned West, a respected farm hand, was arrested and convicted of the murder. It appears John and Ned were drinking heavily and got into an argument. Ned killed John with a hammer. After serving his prison sentence, John's daughter in law, Mamie, (my grandmother) was notified of his release in the 1930's.
