Notes for R
AYMOND EDWARD BOLAND:
Baptised at St Joseph's Church in Elkader, Iowa on June 25, 1917 and his Godfather was William Donlon and his Godmother was Mrs J.P. Boland.

Raymond was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not sure how our Mother and Dad moved there after getting married and going to St. Paul, Minnesota for their honeymoon. Maybe that was where Uncle John Boland was living at that time, in Minnesota I mean.
Raymond went to St. Joseph's School but did not graduate--something happened in the last week or so of his senior year and he didn't graduate--very sad. He helped at home working with Dad on the WPA where they tore railroad tracks out and other WPA projects. He broke his leg after a dance at Guttenberg, Iowa while riding on a bumper coming up the Guttenberg hill--not sure of the details but this occurred when Mom was pregnant with Luke. I remember him falling and re breaking his leg holding Luke after he was born in 1936.
He went to work in Rockford, Illinois but don't remember for how long. he did come home with a 38 ford convertible and somehow it got rolled over on a bend going to or coming from Mederville, Iowa which was just a few miles from home at the McDermott Place in Cox Creek.
When the war broke out he was drafted into the army and spent time in Fort Bragg, Okinawa, and a number of other places. He was a military policeman, I think. Before going into the service he met Evelyn Pesek and they married in 1944. Evelyn traveled with Ray to the various bases he was assigned. Ray and Evelyn loved to dance and i can remember seeing them dancing at Lakeside, in Guttenberg, Iowa a number of times. They could flow around that huge dance floor in a flash.
Ray worked at Penick and Ford in Cedar Rapids for most of his life and retired from there. They bought a house in North East Cedar Rapids in the 40's and have lived there ever since. It has been home to their family for 60 years.
Ray, Evelyn, their kids and many times a lot of others have gone north to go fishing in Northern Minnesota since the late 40's and are up there right now, this week. they used to go up and stay with Uncle John in his cabin up there until he sold his land, then they went to the Timber Trails Resort.
Prepared by Joseph W. Boland in June 2001.
I learned in July, 2001 that Ray was stationed in Okinawa at the time the USA was contemplating the invasion of Japan. Then the President made the decision to drop the atomic bomb and that ended the war and shortly after Ray came home. I never realized how close he was when the atomic bomb was dropped.

Notes for E
VELYN PESEK:
I remember taking a bus out Mount Vernon Road with Evelyn and carrying groceries from the Mee Too grocery store in downtown Cedar Rapids. After got off the bus, which was the end of the bus line, we had to walk a half mile to her Mother and Dad's house on 4281 Mount Vernon Road. Both of her brothers Bill and Stanley were home then and they had a shower in the basement which I thought was kind of neat. Her Mother, Dad and brothers were some really neat people to know. You always felt comfortable around them.
She graduated from Edgewood high school and lived on a farm near Edgewood, Iowa and I remember her playing the accordion in a band for dances. She played with her brother-in-law for a number of years until she and Ray married. She worked a number of years at Kresge's in Cedar Rapids. Then she played only on some special occasion like when her nephew Dennis Pesek got married and we all danced outside in the grass.
Evelyn is one of the easiest persons to be with and talk with I know. She has pulled me through many scapes over the years. I remember going there when I got my first job to work on a construction project and I thought I had a job for the whole summer but was given my check after the first days work. Two friends of mine came to her house one night about 1 AM and was looking for a place to sleep after seeing basketball games in Iowa City all day--nearly scared her to death and she had us in to sleep on the living room floor.
She took care of me when I got food poisoning for a week when I was so weak I could not eat much of anything but soup for a week. She washed my clothes when i was working at Wilson Packing and Nutrena Mills each week. She remembers my friend Bob Cox who sent his suitcase of dirty socks for her to do and she had to wash them twice by themselves as they stunk so bad--she said never again.
Anyone that knew Evelyn would tell you she was great lady.

Children of R
AYMOND BOLAND and EVELYN PESEK are:
  i.   DAVID6 BOLAND, b. January 28, 1946.
  Notes for DAVID BOLAND:
David, Ray and Evelyn's first son graduated from High School and St Ambrose college in Davenport, Iowa in the school of music. He graduated with a Music Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. He also received a permanent teaching certificate from the University.
He went on to teach music in Denver, Iowa and is there teaching music to this very day. David did well with his singing and took part in opera's and many musicals.
He loves to work with old coins and do coin shows where there is a lot of bartering going on. He loves to tell stories and is loved by all his nieces and nephews and all young people. He likes to fish and has done a lot of it with his folks, grand parents, uncles, etc over the years.
He is getting close to retirement and is not sure what he is going to do at this point in his life, except he and his folks are up North in Minnesota fishing at Timber Trails Resort.

EGINA ANN BOLAND:
Baptised at St Joseph's Church in Elkader, Iowa on March 11, 1923 and her Godfather was Luke Boland and her Godmother was Mrs Thomas Donlon.

Regina Boland graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Elkader in 1940 and then went on to a Beauty School in Des Moines, Iowa. She setup a Beauty Shop in the home where she and Ernest lived in Coalville, Iowa (part of the eastern side of Elkader). She owned this business for quite a few years until she and Ernest went into farming. She continued to do people's hair for over 20 years
While living in Coalville, she had a still-born child, her first baby, born at her Mother's house which was just across the street from where Ernest and she lived. It was a very sad day for her and all of us who lived there. She felt that from then on they would go to a hospital for any further deliveries of babies.
She did a lot of work with the churches wherever they lived and was active in a lot of the organizations in the area. She and Ernest were good friends of Betty when they lived on the farm between Littleport and Edgewood Iowa. She died of cancer of the bone and within less than a year Betty's husband died of cancer. Ernest and Betty shared their grief with one another and later married.
Betty has been a wonderful wife to Ernest.

RNEST L. HARBAUGH:
Ernest grew up and spent a large part of his life on a farm. Shortly after he was married he worked as a deliverer of gasoline, fuel oil and what have you with Phillips 66. He delivered oil to local Elkader residents and to farms all over Clayton and other neighboring counties. He was very handy working on automobiles and did work for himself and others along that line of work.
Later on he and his wife Regina Boland worked on a farm near Garnivillo, Iowa sharing with the family that owned the farm. He did that for several years, then purchased a farm between Littleport and Edgewood, Iowa. They farmed there for many years until selling it and moving into Manchester, Iowa. They lived in this home until Regina died in 1987 from cancer.
Ernest later on married Betty Mc Dowell and they still live in the same house today.
Ernest died in his home after an extended illiness. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church, Manchester. He will be missed by wife Betty and his three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Notes for G
EORGE BOLAND:
Baptised at St Joseph's Church in Elkader, Iowa on April 17, 1927 and his Godfather was Tom Boland and his Godmother was Amy Jo Donlon.

George T. Boland went to Cox Creek country school for a number of years before going to St Joseph's Catholic School in Elkader. He played the tuba in the band at school--I didn't even know they had a band back then. He used to get rides on a motorcycle with a fellow that went from Elkader to Strawberry Point, Iowa.
I remember once George and I got a ride to Elkader to go to a scarry show and then had to walk al the way back afterwards at night and that was more scary than the show. It was over 7 miles to walk from elkader to where we lived in Cox Creek. Also remember one time we got a ride with a group of gypsies and as we got into Elkader--they were not going to stop and let us out. So George reached over and turned off the gas on the car and then we both jumped from the car--we didn't get killed but it is a small miracle that we didn't.
George worked at Joe and Cliff's hamburger shop in Cedar Rapids in his earlier years after he spent his tour in the navy. It was during this period of time he met Maxine Rauch who worked at Killians and later married her. He joined up with the navy before he was 18 and did spend some time on the USS Hornet carrier and got off at Pearl Harbor before it was sunk at sea.
He worked selling magazines, driving a rendering truck picking up dead farm animals. I went with him on the rendering truck a few times and it was kind of a gross job. He worked at a number of places in Cedar Rapids but worked the longest for a company that was in the photographic business. It was here that he was working when his wife Maxine came down with an illness that caused her to be confined to a wheel chair. They decided to move from their relatively new home in Cedar Hills in Cedar Rapids to Arizona City, Arizona.
George went to work doing building construction and was at that for quite some time. Maxine became better after they moved to Arizona--she no longer was confined to a wheel chair. she went to work in a grocery store and some time later the family broke up and were divorced. it was a difficult time for the family and to make things worse, Maxine had cancer in the breasts and died in May of 1973. The family broke up and things never were the same again.
George met Eleanor Garcia and they were married in 1972. George started working on Volkswagon autos and took it on as a permanent job and did that for many years. He continued to do that until a car came down on him while working and it took quite a while to get back to doing things and eventually he retired from it all. He and Eleanor still live in Casa Grande, Arizona.

AXINE RAUCH:
Maxine worked in Cedar Rapids at the Kilian Department Store and it was while working there she met George. I remember meeting her before they married and she was a very pretty young woman. She was short and enjoyed getting out and liked to have a good time.
Shortly after George and her married in 1947, Paul came along their first son and Paul was there only one for about four years, then they had 4 more boys within 5 years. I am sure she was kept quite busy with the boys for the rest of her life which came early when she got cancer and she died in May of 1973 at the young age of 44.

LEANOR(GARCIA-FIGUEROA-BOURBONNAISE):
Eleanor Garcia married Frank Figueroa and they had three girls, he died after 11 years. She then married Mr. Bourbonnaise and he died after just 11 months. When she was going with George Boland, friends would warn George that he better be careful with this one as a joke. As of this writting they have been married for 29 years.

  Notes for GERALD BOLAND:
Gerald has grown up and I have not seen him very many times over the years. he spent a while with Ernest and Regina at the farm a number of years ago. Then I think he spent some time in San Francisco but have no idea what he worked at there. It seems from there he went to work at a nursing Home Facility in New Mexico and has been there longer than he has been at any place.
He was back in Cedar Rapids the past year for a short stay as he had driven someone's automobile back from New Mexico. He seems to keep pretty much to himself. Someone sent a picture they took of him to me and I will include it when i put pictures of everyone into the history.
