Includes NotesNotes for Helene Augusta Frederiksen:

Helene was born in Sæby, Denmark in 1888. Her family name was Jensen, but due to the large number of "Jensens" in Denmark there was encouragement from the Danish government for families to change their last names. Her family decided together to change to Engskow (also spelled Engskov). This translates roughly to "forest meadow". It is not clear whether or not Helene ever changed her name, as she was married about this time.

As a young woman, Helene Augusta Jensen met and married a young man name Jens Kristian Frederiksen. They were married in July of 1910 in Aalborg at "Vor Frue Sogn" (Our Lady Parish) Luthern church. It is believed they lived in the small town of Feldballe, Denmark (where Jens was born) when first married and shortly after decided to move to the big city of Arhaus. (Their thatched-roof home in Feldballe was photographed by this author in 1989.) Helene, about age 22 and now pregnant with Jenny, and her husband loaded up a horse-drawn wagon for their move to Arhaus. The trip, over bumpy dirt roads, was to take a few days. About half way into the trip, her husband suffered a burst appendix and died. Helene turned the wagon around and brought her young husband's body back to be buried.

A few years later, in 1919, Helene at about age 30, and Jenny, approximately age 8, immigrated to America along with Helene's sister Dagmar. Her entire family of brothers, sisters, and parents had decided to immigrate to America. The only family member who did not was her brother Ingeman "Ernst" Engskow, who became a career Lutheran missonary in the African country of Nigeria. (Ernst's second wife Ruth supplied much of the information in this narritive to David Granholm when he made a visit to her home in Arhus Denmark in 1989.)

Helene, Jenny, and Dagmar took the Scandinavian-American Line steamship "Frederik VIII" from Copenhagen to New York, in late October 1919, and then took the train to Audubon, Iowa. They needed someone to sponsor them in America. He was Fred (Jorgensen) Johnson. Fred was a cousin to Helene's mother Johanna Augusta Engskow. Augusta's parents died when she was young so Fred's parents in Denmark raised her.
