 Includes NotesNotes for Gerhard Grønholm:

This family history was complied by David Granholm. It is my great pleasure to share it with you. Much of the Danish family information was found (or verified) in the Danish Data Archives (DDA) which is an on-line data bank for researchers in Denmark and abroad.

Through this archive (Internet address - http://ddd.sa.dk) a family group was found dated 1850 with a child named Christian Grønholm, age 10. This information matched the known approximate age of my great-grandfather. That led to the discovery that my great-great-grandfather was Gerhard Grønholm. And the archive listed Gerhard's wife, my great-great-grandmother, as Juliane Degenhard.

Gerhard was a "garver" or tanner, (one who works with preserving animal skins).

So where does the name Granholm come from? And what about Grønholm? As it turns out, these two names are quite different. Gran, in Danish, is a common abbreviation of "grantræ" which translates to "spruce tree". Holm is translated into: islet (a small island). Therefore, Granholm means "spruce islet". There actually exists a small island off Finland called Granholm... and yes, it is covered with spruce trees. Most "Granholm" families in the United States trace their ancestry to Finland.

Grønholm, on the other hand, translates differently. Grøn simply means "green" in Danish, so Grønholm simply means "green islet". So, it would seem, the better translation for our name in the US (without the benefit of the Danish letter that doesn't exist in English) probably would be "Grenholm, Greenholm, or maybe Gronholm". Oh well, too late now!
