"R.A. SAMPSON DIES IN BORO
Prominent Niles Valley Man Succumbs at Home of Daughter Here - Was 63 Years Old
Robert Alonzo Sampson, 63, Charleston native and for many years a New York Central employee at Middlebury Center died here Friday evening at the home of daughter, Mrs. B.J. Moore following a long illness. The Very Rev. H. St. Clair Hathaway, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiated at the funeral services at the home at 1:00 and at the Niles Valley church at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The beautiful floral tributes bespoke the esteem in which the deceased was held. Pall bearers were: H.B Cloos, C.E. Davis, F.H. Gee, Maynard Davis, T.C. Miller, Burt Potter. Interment in the Wellsboro Cemetery.
Born in Charleston, July 6, 1870, Robert Alonzo Sampson was the eldest son of John and Lucy Sampson. For a number of years, Mr. Sampson farmed successfully in Charleston, and in 1893, was married to Macie Edward McInroy of Niles Valley. In 1902, Mr. Sampson came to Middlebury, where for 30 years he was clerk in the New York Central station. For a year and a half prior to his illness, Mr. Sampson had been on the circulation staff of the Evening Leader.
Throughout this section of Pennsylvania, and in southern New York, he was well known, and highly respected. H took a constructive interest in community affairs and was regarded as a strong and useful citizen. He was a member of Keeneyville Lodge, I.O.O.F., Crooked Creek Grange and St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Wellsboro.
Surviving are his widow and three children: John Edward, New York Central claim agent, of Albany; Mrs. Bert Moore, of Wellsboro; William Hall, Elementary and Junior high school principal of Verona, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Scheeley and Mrs. Ada Neal of Charleston, and one brother, Richard, of Syracuse..."
