Transcriber's notes: * There are two differing spellings of Robert's surname: F arington and Farrington in the document. ** Others have mentioned that 'Farington/Farrington' coul d equally well be transcribed as 'Harington/Harrington'. I have chos en 'F' because the uppercase, old-style, script 'F' is certainly i dentical to that of the first letter in 'February', which appears a t least twIce elsewhere on folio 74. Quaker or Anglican "The Early Settlers of Maryland" by Skordas shows the rec ord of Josep h Billiter [affectionately condensed to "Old Joe" by this aut hor, his ggggggg-grandson, Jim, (JHB)] in liber 17, folio 74 of Mary land Land Pa tents. Joseph was transported 1671. I.e.: someone else paid hi s passage. (I n his prefix Skordas says, "... 'transported' means that someon e other than the person indexed paid for his passage. Quite often a perso n 'transported ' is also described as a 'servant', which means that he had con tracted to r epay the cost of his transportation by agreeing to act as a servan t for a period of years. Under certain of the Conditions of Plantation, a s ervant was e ntitled to claim fifty acres of land upon completing his period o f servitude satisfactorily. Such claims are indicated by the word 'serv Ice'.") Cou rtesy JHB. The early Billiters were Quakers, attested to by their part icipation in Third Haven Meeting, Talbot Co, MD in the late 1600's. Whether O ld Joe was a Quaker upon arrival in 1671 or joined during Fox's missionary camp aign along t he colonial east coast shortly thereafter is a matter for deba te. Fox was the founder of the Quakers in England. Old Joe's marriage is attested by: Talbot County Maryland Records Volumes 1-2 compiled by R. BernIce Leonard - "June 1674 Elizabeth Fuller to Joseph Billetor, Plaster-pow er of attorney to acknowledge and make voyd all my right, titl e and interest of my husband's now dwelling plantation. Witnesses William Phillips and William Hogon." Courtesy Dave Gerth. Two of Old Joe's children, Thomas and Grace, were married i n the Church of England (St Peter's Parish) in the early 1700's. This is p robably a consequence of the imposition of the state Church about 169 4 by the Arc hbishop of Canterbury and the English Crown on Maryland, previousl y tolerant of all religions (Christian-Trinitarian) from the time of its foun ding by the Calverts, the several Lords Baltimore. Several CofE minist ers had repo rted to the Archbishop that the Maryland colonists were 'iniquitous ' and despar ately in need of CofE ministries, along with the 'livings' attendan t to CofE min sters of the period. The state then imposed a tax of 40 pounds of t obacco on ea ch household to support the 'livings' of the CofE ministers . Old Joe prob ably died in 1687 and he wasn't all that old, because he lef t a young family behind. Elizabeth and the children probably could not afford to sup port two rel igions, especially when one possessed the enforcement authority o f the Crown. Many have looked into the early Maryland Billiters: from th e research o f Marsha Bovey in the early 1980's to the Billiter Family lis ting in 'Col onial Families of the Eastern Shore of Maryland', Volume 5, Pede n and Wright, Willow Bend Books, Westminster, MD, 1999 (Courtesy Gladys Treadway ). The cita tions here for this family group and for son Edward's line to Jos eph's g-gran dson, Edward, mainly follow the latter source, since it is concis e and fairly exhaustive. Names of the children and their Birth dates are in Third Ha ven records. Joseph's approximate date of death is taken from the fact t hat Third Ha ven Meeting showed concern for the Widow Billeter on 21 Augus t 1687. Also: From "Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records" by F. This 'Swi ss origin' assertion for Old Joe probably stems from the influ ential Swiss genealogists, Julius Billeters Sr and Jr. They, profession al genealogi sts, had stated that the Billiter/Billeter name was 'strictly Swiss' , and many o f us took them at their word, which now (December, 2000) seems t o be mistake n in the case of the early Billiters of Maryland. "The Billeters from Mannedorf and the Zweifels from Linthal " by Julius C. Billeter, 1984 published by Joseph Lyon & Associates, Sal t Lake City. This is a geneology going to the very early 16th century for Julius ' family. Mannedorf is in Canton Zurich. There is no mention of emig ration to Am erica that would associate this family with ours. Some noteworth y extracts: P. 65. "The Billeters were early settlers in Mannedorf, ha ving come or iginally from Bilten, canton Glarus. The name is believed to signif y someone wh o came from Bilten. The Billeters, sometime spelled Billiter, ..." P. 67. "Shortly after the Billeters established themselve s in Mannedor f, one branch of the family left Mannedorf and settled in the cit y of Zurich." (From context this was prior to 1520 - JHB) P. 68. "There is in the city of London a complex of buildi ngs and stre ets named Billiter. Although the spelling is very similar, n o connection w ith the family name Billeter has been established." (P. 69) "... A lthough the origin is not known, it suggests the name Billiter might be a deri vative of Be ll-zeter - a bell founder." P. 71. begins a discussion of the several Billeter coats o f arms with drawings. Courtesy JHB. Julius' comment about Bell-founding is important, and Middl e English et ymology seems to confirm that 'Billiter' is derived from the occupa tion Bell-fo under, or Bellyeter. William le Belyotar is mentioned somewhere i n English re cords in 1247, as is Robert le Bellegeter in 1283, making the firs t mentions of the name in England older than that of the Swiss by More than a cent ury. The mention of a John Billiter, rather than Joseph, is inte resting. Is this simply a 'scriveners error' or were there other Billiters i n the coloni es (VA or MD) contemporary with, or earlier than, Old Joe's arriva l in 1671? He im migrated to Lord Baltimore's colony in 1671, perhaps as a n indentured servant , and probably from England. The early Billiters were Quakers, attested to by their part icipation in Third Haven Meeting, Talbot Co, MD in the lat e 1600's. Whether Old Joe was a Quaker upon arrival in 167 1 or joined during Fox's missionary campaign along the colo nial east coast shortly thereafter is a matter for debate . Fox was the founder of the Quakers in England. Two of Old Joe's children, Thomas and Grace, were married i n the Church of England (St Peter's Parish) in the early 17 00's. This is probably a consequence of the imposition of t he state Church about 1694 by the Archbishop of Canterbur y and the English Crown on Maryland, previously tolerant o f all religions (or at least those which espoused a Christi an-Trinitaran view) from the time of Maryland's founding b y the Catholic Calverts, the several Lords Baltimore. Sever al CofE ministers had reported to the Archbishop that the M aryland colonists were 'iniquitous' and desparately in nee d of CofE ministries, along with the 'livings' attendant t o CofE minsters of the period. The Crown then imposed the s tate religion and a tax of 40 pounds of tobacco on each hou sehold to support the 'livings' of the ministers. Old Joe p robably died in 1687, but he wasn't all that old, because h e left a young family behind. Elizabeth and the children pr obably could not afford to support two religions, and one p ossessed the enforcement authority of the Crown. (Research):Descendants of Joseph Billiter, the Boat Builde r on the Monongahela, and Sarah Seward Billiter Flourished Belle Vernon, PA 1796-1826, b (where?) abt 1770 by Jim Billiter - Jim@Billiter.com Joseph Billiter lived from the 1790's into the late 1820' s along the Monongahela River near where Interstate 70 no w crosses it in the Pennsylvania town of Belle Vernon, aptl y named for its beautiful vistas from the 200-300 foot heig hts above the river plain. In the heyday of keelboats and f latboats on 'western waters' (rivers west of the eastern co ntinental divide) my great-great-great grandfather built so me of those boats. He was also the first ferryman of the to wn, probably working with help from his wife, Sarah Sewar d Billiter, sons, and daughters, all within shouting distan ce of the present I-70 crossing. Joe the Boat Builder was buried in Belle Vernon's first cem etery on Gould Hill, but his and many other graves were des troyed by developers probably in the early 1900's, as my br other, Ralph, and I sadly discovered on a visit there abou t 1990. Those developers (who should be thirteen times curs ed with guilt) likely invented the fiction that the housin g over Joe's grave in 'Seldom Seen' had been built over a n Indian burial ground, as told to us around 1990 by the cu rrent owner-landlady. As if destruction of an Indian buria l ground was in some way less dishonorable to the remains o f the dead! Ralph and I informed her that the property rest ed on Belle Vernon's first cemetery, wherein our ancestor s formerly reposed. In Belle Vernon's favor we must gratefully commend and than k all the friendly residents who helped Ralph and me, compl ete strangers, in our ultimately futile quest for Joe's gra ve: a polIce lieutenant, the Mayor, workers at the 'new' ce metery, librarians, and even some folks at the motel wher e we stayed overnight. The errors in this genealogy are mine or those of the othe r contributors. We would appreciate corrections. Please sup port your corrections with transcribed sources or a cogen t rationale. Submitter: Jim Billiter Contents Citations A thanks and a tip of the hat to the following people who h ave contributed significantly to the basic research of th e Billiters of Pennsylvania. In alphabetical order: Ellen K Billiter, Ralph P Billiter, Joan D Bivens, Kay Nola n Dawson, Donna L Lester, Mae Nolan, Gary Patterson, Kare n J Romick, Lovey C Silvis, and Gladys Treadway. And special recognition to Donna Lester for the artwork nea r the top of this page depicting 'Joe the Boat Builder' a s a young man building a keelboat on the Monongahela Rive r in Belle Vernon, PA. Her work conjures up new images of J oe for me. I see him there as a fairly young man, maybe i n his early 30's, sleves rolled up, perhaps around 1802, th e father of five at that time, black hair (probably to star t to gray when John was born in 1816), robust, hardened b y outdoor work, but clever enough to have mastered the ar t of building river boats. Noah C Sr would be about a yea r old and he would be home with mother, Sarah Seward Billit er, his three young sisters, and Joseph Jr who is perhap s 7 years old at the time. I see Joe's next planks staged f or work in the grass near the bow, a saw and some sawhorses , indicating that he is a meticulous organizer. The grass i s lush, and the Mon is gurgling along merrily, so I'll gues s Joe is working on a comfortable Day in the spring, but sw eating a bit nevertheless. It appears to be overcast, but n ot raining, so I imagine that Joe was Happy to be alive o n such a Day as Donna depicted. Also, Lucy Ann Billiter re-created, pixel-by-pixel, the Bil liter Coat-of-Arms' shield reported by The Hall of Names In c. folks to be the earliest for the name Billiter in Englan d. It is shown at the top of this page. Open Questions Whence came Joe the Boat Builder? Thanks to Dave Gerth (fo r the pointer) and Karen Romick (for the retrieval), it i s now (November 2000) likely that Joe is descended from a n earlier Joseph Billiter ('Old Joe') who arrived in the De lmarva in 1671, probably from England. See our best ideas a bout Old Joe's known genealogy for five generations at Mary land Billiter Lines . The evidence so far is mainly an 1824 deed in Bracken Co, K Y that has Joseph Billiter of Fayette Co, P A selling some land that Joe's wife, Sarah Seward Billiter , inherited from her Father, Samuel Seward, along with eigh t of her siblings. In context, this deed places Joe the Boa t Builder among the descendants of Edward Billiter [b 18 Oc tober 1683 Talbot Co, MD and s/o Old Joe m 1674 Elizabeth F uller]. Some of Edward's descendants migrated to Stokes Co , NC, and then onto Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Avid researchers of the Billiter tribe may note that anothe r Joseph Billiter ('JoeJr' m Elizabeth Schaffer and s/o Jo e the Boat Builder) was thriving in nearby Brown Co, OH a t the time this important deed was executed in Bracken Co , Ky. That Joe cannot be the Joe Billiter of the deed, sinc e we know that JoeJr was married to another woman, Elizabet h, when the 1824 deed was made. (Brown Co History. Courtes y Karen Romick.) We can discuss the possibilities at the Billiter Forum Other Billiter Web Sites Gary Patterson's award-winning Patterson-Billiter genealog y site.
