Margar et was a daughter of Dr. John Moore of Mooresville, PA. Jam es Morris resided with his wife and owned two tracks of lan d along Dunkard Creek near Blacksville, in Monongalia Count y, Virginia, now West Virginia. One of the farms being th e same farm that Alexander Clegg lived on when his daughter s were captured by the Indians and his wife was shot and wo unded by them in April 1791. James and Margaret raised thei r family on that farm, and in his later days sold it and mo ved to Wetzel County, VA now WV, where he died on Rocky Ru n on May 12, 1834. His wife, Margaret, was a doctor and much noted as a mid-wi fe. Her servIces were in great demand, she called for far a nd near, and traveled a great deal about the country. She w as a women of great energy and skill, and lived until Jul y 1865. She died in Wetzel County near where her husband di ed on Rocky Run. James and Margaret Morris had 21 children born to them. eig hteen boys and three girls, some of them died young. The on es growing to adult-hood as far as ascertained were: AMOS , ISAAC, ANTHONY, JONATHAN, JAMES, SAMUEL, NATHAN, JESSE, M OSES, MICIAH, JACOB, MORDICA LINKHORNE, John, HESIKIAH, RUT H, and HANNAH. Late report by Hoy B. Morris, ca. 1987.....It has been sai d by many that James Morris was a cousin to Robert Morris , of Revolutionary War fame. No one has stated that he wa s a first cousin, of which I am sure he was not, but it i s very possible he could have been a 2nd or 3rd cousin. O f this I haven't done much research The name Mordicia Linkhorne, appears to have been a famil y and appears in the early family of President Lincoln. A s for the Morris and Lincoln family connection, it could po ssibly be true, but again I have done no research on this. Washin gton, PA.(5) The marriage ceremony was preform ed by Clergyman John Corbly. Margaret Moore (1) (3) was born in 1778 in , , Virginia (now WV) . She died in Jul 1865 in , Wetzel, WV. She was buried in G arrett Cem., 8 Mile Ridge, Reader, Wetzel, VA(WV). (5) It is said that the inscription on Margaret's tomb stone was "Some Mothers have Children, Some Mothers have No ne, Here Lies the Mother of 21. Shortly after starting to r esearch the families in my wife's line, I wrote to 'THE TRI -COUNTY RESEARCHER', a quarterly publication covering the W est Virginia counties of Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel. Amon g the information received is an answer from Ethel Briggs , then co-editor. She wrote that she researched the family of James and Marga ret for an entire summer. She was intrigued with the stor y that on Margaret's tombstone was the inscription " Some h ave children, some have none, but this one had twenty one" . After an extensive search she found an old man in his 80' s who knew where the cemetery was, and who had dug many gra ves in it during his lifetime, and verified that he had see n the inscription. It was in the old Garret cemetery, not f ar from the home of her son Nathan. The grave is supposed t o be to the left down over the hill, next to the fence. Th e marker has broken and is gone. She said that James is sup posed to be buried here with no marker. Mrs. Briggs goes on to tell of research in the Blacksville , W. Va., area, and in the Courthouse of Wetzel County. Sh e accounted for 16 births to this woman, and thought that t here may have been other children who may have died very yo ung. Margaret Moore Morris is said to have been a mid-wife , and highly thought of, and with her father being a docto r this is very probable. It was said that she would walk fo r miles with her little black bag to help a mother in labor. Notes for John B. Dulaney: (Research):Research: On 12/29/1836 the heirs of John Dulane , namely his widow, Rebecca and sons, John, Daniel, Thomas and Moses, and daugh ter, Mary, conveyed the tract of 86 acres known as "The Cave Tract", i n Fayette Co, PA. Not Long after that sale, these sons, along with thei r ;mother, Rebecca, began moving to what is now Wetzel County, WV. A t that time it was Tyler County, VA. Excerpts from Laurel Caverns book, by Paul Damon In 1814 John Dulaney, whohad owned and framed the Downard Q uarry property, adjacent to the cave property since 1794, approac hed John Oliphant, the wealthy iron master, about purchasing some o f this land so he could expand his farm, an odd shaped piece of land. Joh n Delaney obviously had a sincere interest in this land for farmingpu rposes although his family was by now getting older, and Thomas, h is eldest son had already married and moved off the ridge. The remainde r of the Delaney family lived on the lower part of the farm until 18 23, when John Delaney died. Then his widow, Rebecca, on 3/3/1824 purchase d a cabin on a 21 acre property on the ridge adjoining that of her son D anile, also a farmer. At this point, the cave farm no longer occupied, bu t probably farmed by several of The sons. However, since the cave beco me most popular during the ownership of John Delaney, and visitor s stopped at Thomas Delaney's house, the name Delaney remained associate d with the cave for over 150 More years. When the property was re-surv eyed about 1900, it turned out to be about 114 acres. By 1936 the Delaney family and the Bartlett family, who int ermarried with them over generations were leaving the county to relocate i n a More favorable farming area in Wetzel County, Va (now WV). All t he Delaney and Bartlett properties were being sold, some of them to Mo ses W. Delaney, another son of John, who evidently became the onl member of the immediate family to remain in the county. The cave farm wa s sold on 12/29/1836, by the heirs of John Delaney tofinally clear th e estate. The heirs who owned the cave between 1824 and 1836 were: Re becca Delaney, widow; John Delaney, Jr and his wife Nancy; Thomas Delaney and his wife Mary; Daniel Delaney and his wife Jane; Moses Dela ney and his wife Eliza; and Isaac Bartlett and his wife Mary (Delaney) . They sold the property for $350.00 to a group of businessmen and inve stors, all of whom were themselves related. It is worth $600,000. (Mr. Damon of Monroeville,PA completed an intensive study o f the history of the Laurel Caverns (Delaney-Delaney Cave) in the 1960-19 70's). Notes for Thomas Dulaney: (Research):Research: Some researchers place his date of dea th 4/4/1738, Baltimore Co, MD Some researchers name his father- Gideon DeLaune, b. abou t 1636 of France. According to the book DULANY-FURLONG & KINDRED FAMILIES (Mc Clain Printing Co., Parsons, WV, 1975) written by Roland Dulany Furlong, T homas Dulany, and his wife, Sarah, and son Thomas came to American from Q ueen's County, Ireland sometime soon after the arrival in 1703 of his olde r sons, Joseph, William and Daniel. It appears that the three broth ers came to Port Tobacco, Maryland in the spring of 1703 as indenture d servants. In order to pay for the cost of passage, they were bound in ar ticles of redemption to the captain to be sold at this discretion unl ess they could make suitable terms with a planter to pay the cost of thei r passage. On arrival in the colony, Joseph served an apprentIceship i n a doctors offIce in Port ?Tobacco, MD; William was aschool teacher th ere, and Daniel studied law in the offIce of Col. George Plater of S aint Mary's county, MD. Evidentially, the mother of these older sons ha d died, and their father Thomas, had remarried - Sarah. Much has been w ritten about these three sons, and their descendants. One book is The Du lanysof Maryland by Aubrey C. Land, The Johns Hopkins Press, Baltim ore, MD, 1955, 1968. Daniel (the elder to distinguish him from his son, Da niel, the younger) laid out the plan for what is now the town of Fred erick, MD, in 1745, and was instrumental of the settlement of that area. The will of Thomas Dulany, the immigrant, was dated 3/5/173 8 and recorded in Baltimore Co. MD. an inventory of Thomas Dulany's personal estate taken 4/17/ 1739, show a value of 443.19.4 and 1/4 pounds. A partial list of his pos sessions included the following: Three slaves, one indentured servan t, five horses, eleven cows and heifers, ten steers and one bull, e ight sheep and six yearlings, and twenty-four hogs. Accounts due amounte d 493.14.11 and 1/4 pounds. The final account 10/16/1747 showed a balance o f 238.6.6 and 1/4 pounds after disbursements. The greater part of this am ount was due Dennis Dulaney. (Hall of Records of Maryland, Inventories , liber 26, folio 386-386; Accounts, liber 18, folio 435-437; Account s liver 24, folio 218-219.) The surname evolved from the Irish name O'Dubhshlaine, to a n early Anglicized form - O'Dulany. Eventually the "O" wasdropped a nd the phonetic rendering of Delaney was used. Many variations o f the spelling were used in Ireland and carried over to America. The spell ing was changed from brother to brother and father to son. It is no t uncommon to find brothers buried side by side, with the last name of on e "Dulaney" andthe other "Dulaney". Most of the descendants who staye d in the Maryland-Virginia area used the spelling "Dulany"/ Children of Thomas Dulaney and Sarah are: i. Elizabeth Dulaney ii. John Dulaney iii.
