| Notes for DORA KENDALL: Dora and Fanny probably didn't correspond as there where no letters found in the boxers given to Ruth from Fanny. In June 1914 Martha wrote to Fanny saying that Dora and the three children where coming to visit for a fortnight as they all had had the whooping cough and the Doctor had suggested a holiday at the seaside. Martha says she could not say no as Dora was trying to a better woman and Martha felt she had to do all she could to help her. Roz fells this refers to the fact that Dora had a drinking problem. | Notes for THOMAS BICKERSTAFFE KENDALL: Bick served in WW1 with the Sherwood Foresters in France. Trisse's (Beatrice) his sister wrote that he was in the thick of the Battle, and was wounded and spent time in a hospital in Rouen. Bick was gassed in the fighting this affected his lungs. This ailment prompted the move to Auckland, Nez Zealand as the warm climate eased his condition. |

| Notes for GERALD KENDALL: At 19 years of age Ger(o/a)ld immigrated to Western Canada. In a letter to Ruth in 1958 he told of the early years being very rough. He worked in Railway construction and in lumber camps before they homesteaded in 1912. They became successful wheat farmers, they lived at Fir Ridge near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Gerald made a trip home to England in the 1950's he wrote "My how Iwould have liked to see Mother Kendall. I realise how much I owe to her and my early life. I lived a tough life, bush camps and railway construction, but she was always before me, what she said and did, and her letters all through her life." Geralds two sons also became wheat farmers both served in the Canadian army in WW2. |
