Bill Borough was born, raised, and worked in South Bend, Indiana. In the summers he lived with his family at Diamond Lake, Cassopolis, Michigan . Here he learned to sail and has been sailing ever since. See His Sailboats . In 1943 he joined the US Navy and was an Electricians Mate 3rd class on the USS PGM 31. After the war he attended Kalamazoo Collage and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Physics and Art. He worked for The Bendix Corporation as a Senior Chemist. In 1969 he was transferred to the Bendix Launch Support Division at NASA Space Center, Merritt Island, Florida. He worked the for Apollo Mission as a Corrosion Engineer. Living at Coca Beach he and his wife Ginny went to Ron Jons Surf Shop's surf contest on the Beach and saw a Hobie Cat 14 work out through the surf. He was amazed by it's speed and when returning to his job for Bendix in South Bend, he set up a Borough Sailboat Sale Company and got a Hobie Cat dealership. One of the first in the mid West. He also had a dealership for Windsurfer's, Sunfish, Lasers, O'Day, and Aquarius sailboats. In 1978 he retired from Bendix, sold his sailboat business, and moved his family to Deerfield Beach, Florida. and worked as an artist and entered major SE Florida art festivals from 1982 to 1998. Beginning as a marine painter, he then focused on homes of Key West as subject matter. To the right is one of his watercolor paintings of a cigar makers cottage in Key West. He has been affiliated with the International Marine Painters Society, Gold Coast Watercolor Society, and is one of the founding members of the Palm Beach Watercolor Society. He is currently sailing a Sunfish on the Intracoastal Waterway these days. | |
