NOTES ON CHRISTIAN SHADE
Pennsylvania Births Berks County1710 - 1780
compiled by John T. Humphrey.On pg. 301Scheid, Christianbp 1 May 1768
(father) Andreas(mother) wifechurch 16.Church 16 is the Blue Mountain
Church, Upper TulpehockenTownship
While Christian's birthdate is not verified, his gravestone lists his date of death as January 19 1837 and gives age as "69 years 9 months" which would make his dob: April 19, 1767. It is believed that he was born in Berks Co PA .and christened on May 1, 1768 in the Blue Mountain Church, Strausstown, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
In 1789 at the age of 23 he married 21 year old Catherine Riegel and began a family. Then in early 1801 the family moved to Carlisle PA. where on May 26, 1801,with seven children under, all under 12 years of age he purchased town lot #360 in the Borough of Carlisle, Cumberland Co. PA.for $1800 and on August 5, 1801 he there bought an additional lot (#61) containing one acre and one hundred and twenty perchas. On April 12 1813 he sold 95 acres 142 perches of this land to Peter Blosser for 1420 "pounds" and moved his familyto Ohio,
It is possible that his three oldest children remained in Carlisle (they would have been ages 19, 21, and 24 at the time he moved to Ohio) I have no information on them. I do believe that his other children went with him to Ohio.
On June 15, 1813 he purchased 160 acres in Butler Twp, Columbiana Co.(SW quadrant of section 26 - now part of Winona Ohio) His wife Catherine Riegel died there in 1817 at age 49, and is there buried.
Seven years later, On June 5, 1824 he sold 120 acres to George Brantingham, andIn 1831 he sold the remaining 40 acres (pt of SW 1/4 Sec 26 T16 Range 4) to his son John Shade for $800. (Ohio Deeds Book 13 pg 699 - copy in my possession)This Deed signed by Christian and his wife Mary (this is the only known record that Christian re-married after the death of his first wife, Catherine Riegel)
Christian died in Seneca Co. OHon January 19 , 1837 and is there buried in Smith Cemetery, Venice Twp. Seneca Co OH., a small abandoned cemetery located on land that was once owned by his son John. His obituary appeared in the Tiffin Gazette - Seneca Advertiser on Feb 18, 1837.
From Tiffin take State Route 224 east to a little town of Attica. At the street light make a right turn onto State Route 4 (you will be going south).Just after you get on Route 4 you will come to the little hamlet
of Caroline.Keep going south, and you will see a rest area on the left.Turn left at the rest area and the cemetery is just across the road from the far end of the rest area.Helen said she parked at the rest area & walked across the road.

Copied from Bob Shade's notes:"Christian and Wife Catherine purchased 45 acres on the banks of Conogunist Creek, Cumberland Co. from John and Mary Carothers on Apri 2, 1802 (Vol 1 bk V pg 652) dated April 12 1813, recorded December 24, 1813, Frankford Twp.Christian and Wife Caterine sold property Peter Blosser."
..............................................
Christian's middle initial is found on pg 109 of "The Riegel Family" a genealogy by Mary Riegel Brower. There is no other known source for this initial.
..............................................
In 1993 Ivisited the land owned by Christian in Columbiana County Ohio and have since communicated by mail with George and Edna Brantingham. George's ancestor purchased the land from Christian Shade in 1824.George and his wife now own and reside on that land. His address as of 1995 is 32349 Winona Road, Winona OH 44493.
The following short biography was prepared for and sent to George Brantingham and his wife Ednaon September 8, 1995.
GEORGEBRANTINGHAMANDCHRISTIAN SHADE
On June 5, 1824 George Brantingham purchased 120 acres of land in the SW quarter of section 26 Butler Township, Columbiana County from Christian Shade for the sum of fifteen hundred fifty dollars.
Christian Shade, was born April 1767.He was the youngest child of Andreas Shade andhis wife Maria Krafft, both emigrants from Germany.Andreas Shade arrived in Americain 1750 and settled in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. There heacquired 300 acres, married Maria, and there they farmed, raised their nine children, died, and are buried.
March 3, 1789, at the age of twenty-two, Christian married twenty-one year old Catherine Riegel, the daughter of Simon Riegel and Gertrude Kirschner.During the next thirteen years eight children were born to this couple. Then, in 1802 they moved their young family to Cumberland County Pennsylvania where Christian purchased ninety-five acres, and there the last three of their eleven children were born.
In 1813 Christian Shade sold his land in Cumberland County Pennsylvania and moved his family to Butler Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. There, on June fifth of that year, he purchased 160 acres from Edward Burson and his wife Elizabeth for the sum of twelve hundred eighty dollars.
During the next fourteen years it is presumed that Christian and Catherine Shade and their children farmed this land.It is also presumed that it was there that several of theirchildren were married:Marie Elizabeth Shade married Jacob Woolf;Abraham Shade married Phoebe Woolf; Adam Shade married Catherine Quail; SamuelShade married Catherine Carrick; William Shade married Mary Speaker; Sally Shade married David Woolf; John Shade married Elizabeth Speaker; and Jonathon Shade married Elizabeth Springer.
November 26, 1817, at the age of forty-nine years two months, Christian's wife Cartherine died. She is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery (also known as the Woolf Family Cemetery). Her tombstone, viewed in 1993 in a broken but legible condition reads: "In Memory of Catherine Shade Consort of Christian Shade, Born Sept 20th 1768. Departed this Life Nov. 26th 1817, Aged 49 Years, 2 Months 6 Days."
Little is known of Christian's life after the death of Catherine. It appears that he remained in Columbiana County Ohio for about seven years.Christian sold 40 acres of his land to his son John Shade and the above listed 120 acres to George Brantinghambefore moving, at the age of about fifty-seven to Seneca County, Ohio, where thirteen years later he died on January 19, 1837 at the age of sixty-nine years nine months, and is there buried in the Smith Cemetery.
