Traditionally believed, desc of old Welsh family later settled in Yorkshire. Is a record for John, son of Ruth with baptism given and father Thomas. During or prior to 1636, came to Old Mass Bay Colony, 10 acre grant in Green Harbor. March 7,1642 John was propounded to be a Freeman and was so admitted on March 7,1643. John was appointed on June 4,1645 to be Constable of Duxbury, Mass. In1650 he moved to Taunton, was constable, selectman, rep to Plymouth Court. His land is what is now called Berkley,Mass., on the Tauton River. On May 10,1650 he was on a jury to enquire about the death of Thomas Cooke. He was found drowned in the Tauton River about 6 miles from town. On May 11th the jury found Mr.Cooke stole a canoe and in his haste to, fell into the river and was drowned "and came to his end". 12/6/1653 Plymouth Colony records, he was fined for unfaithfulness in appraising a cow-he exchanged it for one of lesser worth, on behalf of woman whose husband was away in England. 1657-sold Duxbury land and was one of the original 26 purchasers of a 4 mile tract of land " known as The Freemen's Purchase". He was awarded lot 23 which is now known as Profile Rock located near Assonet,Mass. 8/8/1671-soldier in King Philip's war against Indians assembled his house. He was killed in war, date in report of John Freeman who said he was killed and his house burned. Shadrack Wilbur, Town clerk, recorded date as 6/27/1675. He and wife buried Tisdale Burying grounds overlooking Taunton River, near Assonet, Mass. There was a dispute on settlement of estate but agreed 3/6/1677. John Jr double portion.
