History

The name Bothwell is of Celtic origin and probably originated as a place name, Both's Well, meaning the well at Both. It also may have originated to describe a person from the village of Bothwell, Scotland, which is near Glasgow. The famous Bothwell Castle is located there overlooking the river Clyde. It originally was owned by the Earl of Bothwell (whose family name was Hepburn), who traded it to the Douglas Clan for a castle in the lowlands near the English border.
There does not appear to be a tartan associated with the Bothwell name as Bothwell is considered a lowland Scott family and not a member of any clan. Most lowland families did not have tartans.
Coat of Arms
The Bothwell Coat of Arms is described in Burke's General Armory as a blue escutcheon (shield) with a gold chevron between three stemmed gold clovers and a red crescent on the chevron. Above the shield is a helmet and mantle of the rank of earl. Atop the shield is the crest, a naked boy pulling down the top of a pine tree.
I have seen a different coat of arms with fleur d'leis instead of clovers and no crescent.
