A True Union Man
It is with very deep regret that we report the passing on of Broher J. Paul Howlett from the CU Department.
Paul will be sorely missed by all of his co-workers and his multitude of friends in the labor movement.
He was destined to become a labor man from the time he was born.He came from a long line of relatives who were connected with the United Mine Workers, some of them from the very beginning of the labor movement in that field. At the age of twelve he himself started to work in the coal mines and belonged to the UMW when it really took courage to stick your chin out for organized labor. This was something he really had.
He started to work in ALCOA in 1933 and immediately began to organize the workers into a union if there own choosing. He was one of the first officers of the organization, and was President of 18356 in 1936
He was a strong advocate of Industrial Unionism, and as early as 1935 spearheaded a meeting of various locals in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio, which was held at Warren, Ohio for the purpose of starting Industraial Unions. He knew then that the AF of L would never be able to serve the masses of the people.
When the CIO came into being, he helped overthrow the shackles of the AF of L and helped create the old AWA in the CIO.
He had served his union well and has now passed on to a well earned rest.
His thoughts were always for the betterment of his fellowman.(Page 3)In his last few years before his death he was not too active but this was because of his bad health.
The members of the department of which he was chirman for so many years paid him real tribute last Thursday evening. They met in a body at the union hall and marched up to John Donaher's Funeral Home where he was laid out and conducted Burial Services for him as prescribed by the Constitution.
At the same time the members of the deparment had given a donation, because of the fact that he had been off sick for quite sometime before his death. They presented his widow with a check for $181.00.
So in closing we say that Local 302 has lost a tried and faithful servant, and may he be justly rewared in the hereafter.
