  Notes for Issac C. Barnes:
Isaac was, for some time naval officer for customs for the district of Boston and Charlestown, MA, and afterwards, for several years, US Marshall for Massachusetts. In this role, he rescued two black boys from one of the last (if not THE last) slave ships to call at Boston. For, at least, one of them he gave the name "Billy" and his own family name. In addition he found Billy a home at the Bedford NH home of Esther Richardson Barnes (his sister) and her husband, Gardner Nevins.

Isaac gave the main address at the May 22, 1850 Centennial celebration of the town of Bedford NH. Full text is in "The History of Bedford" 1903.

He graduated Middlebury College, 1820.
