Notes for WILLIAM BOSTON: Melrose Parish Magazine...No 461..May, 1937 The Boston Family: In the westermost chapel in the Abbey is to be read an inscription that runs; "The dust of many generations of the Bostons of Gattonside is deposited in this place. We give our bodies to this holy Abbey to keep".....They were not only an ancient family, but wide-spread. here is a note about two of them who lived in Darnick in the early half of the nineteenth century. It is taken from Rutherford's Southern Counties Directory for 1866: "The last of the Darnick weavers were William and Thomas Boston (brothers], who finding their trade falling off, determined about the year 1820, work at the time becoming more than ordinarily scarce, to visit a married sister settled near London, Upper Canada. Taking Sheffield on their way to embarkation, they purchased a large stock of needles. After landing at New York, they walked on to Canada and peddled needles along the route. They thus saw the country and what is more to the purpose, the needle's sale cleared more than their voyage and journey's expenses. Arrived at their sisters, they took to weaving as temporary employment, when by producing checked ginghams with which to clothe their sister's children, they created quite a demand for their production. William returned the following year to Darnick to sell the family property and take away his mother and widowed sister.
