ABOUT 1802 HE MARRIED CATHERINE (KATHERINE) FRANKLIN WHO ALSO WAS BORN IN
MARYLAND. HE OWNED A FARM IN BOONESBOROUGH TOWNSHIP AT DUE WEST, SC. AND
FOUNDED GILGAL CHURCH, STILL STANDING AND IN USE IN ABBEVILLE COUNTY
IN B. TOWNSHIP. BOWIE'S AND THEIR KINDRED LISTS HIS BIRTH AS 1781. MANY OF
THE DATES IN THIS TIME FRAME ARE DIFFICULT TO NAIL DOWN PRECISELY. OTHER
SOURCES LIST HIS BIRTH AS 1774. "KINDRED" LISTS HIS DEATH AS 1850 AND HIS
WIFE AS 1867. WHEN ELI CAME TO SC HE WAS IN LOVE WITH THE MARYLAND LASS THAT
BECAME HIS BRIDE SOON AFTER HER FAMILY FOLLOWED ELI'S FAMILY TO GREENWOOD
COUNTY. ELI WAS NOT A CHURCH MEMBER ALTHOUGH HE WAS RAISED IN A PRESBYTERIAN
FAMILY. AFTER HE MARRIED KATHERINE FRANKLIN THEY BUILT A HOME ON A FARM THEY
HAD PURCHASED IN THE BUCKSTAND SECTION OF THE ABBEVILLE DISTRICT ON THE
MICHAEL MCKEE LAND GRANT. THE HOUSE STOOD ON A HILL ABOUT 1 MILE FROM THE
PRESENT GILGAL CHURCH. BETWEEN 1815 AND 1820 A METHODIST EXHORTER CAME THROUGH
THE AREA ON A MISSION TOUR. HE CONVERTED ELI WHO THEN EMBRACED THE METHODIST
FAITH AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN ORGANIZING GILGAL CHURCH, approximately 1817/1820. HE DIED JUN E 24,1844
AND WAS BURIED IN OLD BOWIE BURYING GROUND NEAR THE GRAVE OF HIS SISTER
CATHERINE. KATHERINE, HIS WIFE, DIED MAY 28, 1869 AND IS BURIED BESIDE HER
HUSBAND.

Charles County. They were active in the Methodist Church and owned a farm in
the Boonboro Township of Abbleville, SC. Her husband organized Gilgal Church
which is still in weekly use. She and Eli are buried in the old Bowie Cemetery near Gilgal M ethodist Church near Due West, Abbeville, SC.

Methodist Church Cemetery. Gravestone is broken, but legible

MAJOR JOHN HODGES AND THE SISTER OF GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON HODGES. HE WAS
MARRIED A SECOND TIME TO JANE D. MILFORD. ACCORDING TO "KINDRED" ALL THE
CHILDREN OF HEZEKIAH AND LUCINDA SIMS BOWIE MOVED TO CHOCTAW COUNTY
MISSISSIPPI PRIOR TO 1850. THE CENSUS OF 1850 SHOWED:

(Note:In WHERE THE BRAMBLES BLOOM G. Henry Bowie indicates Richard Price Bowie
was born in 1781, which causes some confusion as to which date is correct. He
first married Catherine Hodges, sometime listed as Elizabeth Hodges. It is
likely her name was Catherine Elizabeth Hodges. They had six children
together. After Catherine died, he married Jane Dickson (or Dixon) Milford and
together they had one child, Martha Jane Bowie. He is buried in the old Bowie
Family Burying Ground near Due West, Abbeville County, SC. An inscription on
his tombstone reads: "He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church,
Greenville Congregation." Greenville Congregation was in Greenwood County, SC.
