CHURCH. HIS MIDDLE NAME IS NOT KNOWN, BUT THERE IS SOME SPECULATION IT MAY
HAVE BEEN "BRIGHT." THEIR HOME WAS ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN BUCKSTAND AND GILGAL
CHURCH. THE HOME WAS STILL STANDING ACCORDING TO "BRAMBLES" IN 1976, WHERE
THEY REARED THREE DAUGHTERS. HE WAS A FARMER AND PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR OWNED
SLAVES. HE IS BURIED IN GILGAL CEMETERY BESIDE HIS WIFE.

Asa Bowie and spouse Martha Arabella Botts Bowie had 9 children. Both were born in the Gilga l Section of Abbeville County, near Due West, SC. They were
affectionately known as Uncle Ace and Aunt Bella. Asa served as a sergeant in Holcombs Legio n in the Confederate Army. They lived almost all of their
married life on Hall Branch about one mile from Gilgal Methodist Church where
they farmed for a livelihood. Both are buried in Gilgal Methodist Church
Cemetery, Due West, Abbeville County, SC.

Born in the Gilgal Church area of Abbeville County, SC, Thomas Francis Marion
Bowie enlisted in the Confederate Army as a boy in his teens. He suffered a
chest wound during battle. He returned home and lived as an invalid for several
years before he died on 31 March 1870. It is not known where he is buried, but
most likely in the old Bowie Burying Ground or in Gilgal Methodist Church
Cemetery in an unmarked grave. Some of the data on this family member was
supplied by Nancy Jane Bowie Agnew. Dates are from Clara Mae Wilson Carroll who
has the family bible of Asa Bowie.

ANOTHER SOURCE (KINDRED) LISTS BIRTH DATE AS 1820. HE SERVED IN THE
CONFEDERATE ARMY AND RESIDED IN ABBEVILLE. MARRIED MATILDA MCKEE AND HAD 10
CHILDREN AND 6 GRANDCHILDREN. HE WAS A LIFELONG OFFICER AND MEMBER OF GILGAL
CHURCH. HE WAS A SOLDIER IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND WAS CAPTURED AND HELD
PRISONER BY THE UNION FORCES TILL THE END OF THE WAR. AFTER THE WAR HE FARMED
IN THE GILGAL COMMUNITY THE REST OF HIS LIFE. HE IS BURIED IN GILGAL CHURCH
CEMETERY. HIS NAME ON THE GRAVESTONE IS INCORRECTLY SPELLED HENRY "BRONNER"
BOWIE, WHICH HAS LED TO SEVERAL SPELLING ERRORS IN HISTORICAL RECORDS
