47. Robert Johnson⁷ Bowie (Hezekiah⁶ Bowie II, Eli⁵ Bowie, Rhodi⁴, John³, Abraham², John¹ Boye) was born 15 Oct 1842, and died 10 Sep 1892. He married Frances Eliza Bowie, daughter of Rhodi Bowie, Jr. and Elizabeth Doil.

IN THE 1860 CENSUS FOR BEAT 2 ATTALA COUNTY, MS. HE WAS LISTED AS AN OVERSEER
OF FARMING INTERESTS. HE WAS LISTED BY HIMSELF AND NOT AS A CHILD OF HEZEKIAH
AND MARGARET ANN MCCOWN. IT IS POSSIBLE SINCE HE WAS EMPLOYED HE WAS LIVING
APART FROM THE FAMILY, AND SINCE NO SPOUSE WAS LISTED AND HE WAS 19 YEARS OLD
AT THE TIME HE PROBABLY HAD NOT MARRIED AT THAT TIME. A NOTATION ON THE CENSUS
TRACT INDICATED A FLETCHER GIBBONS LIVED ON THE PREMISES AND WORKED AS A
SERVANT (CENSUS OF 1880).

3/22/95: DATA IN "THE MARYLAND BOWIES" INDICATE ROBERT JOHNSON BOWIE
WAS MAYOR OF MCCOOL. MS. AND WAS MURDERED IN 1896.

8/10/96: According to G. Henry Bowie in Where The Brambles Bloom, Robert
Johnson Bowie was serving as a Magistrate's Constable in McCool, MS when, in
1896, he attempted to arrest a drunk on the street. While taking him into
custody, a friend of the drunk shot him in the back killing him. Neither were
ever apprehended. The true story of his position is subject to conjecture. Was
he mayor or constable? That will take some more research. (See page 350 in
Where The Brambles Bloom).

Martha E. Bowie is found in several sources under that name. On a family group record obtaine d by Everette Bowie, Olive Branch, MS, she is listed as Mattie. It is noteworthy that all oth er stats are the same. It also is not uncommon for Martha's to be nicknamed Mattie. Therefor e it will be assuned until furthur data is available that Martha and Mattie are the same pers on.

Addendum February 23, 1998: A family group record submitted by Peter W. Cowsert of Madison , MS confirms Martha to also be Mattie. She was the first born of Robert Johnson Bowie and Fr ances Eliza Bowie. She was born & lived in McCool,Attala,MS,USA until she met and married Alo nzo "Lon" Chastain of Calhoun,Gordon,Ga,USA. The couple moved to Calhoun to live and both pro minent in the social scene there until their deaths. They are both buried in Calhoun.

There is uncertainty as to the correct spelling of Alonzo's last name. The
census records of Attala County show the spelling as Chastain, while other data has the nam e spelled Chasteen. It will be assumed till more data is available that Chasteen is correc t since census records are notorious for misspellings and hard to read handwritting. Names we re often spelled the way they sounded.

Addendum February 23, 1998: A family group record from Peter W. Cowsert of Madison, MS confi rms the spelling of "Chastain." He relates that "Lon" and Mattie corrersponded by mail for o ver a year before he came to McCool to met her, after which they were married. They made thei r home in Calhoun,Gordon,GA,USA where Lon was a prominent businessman.

This spouse was not in the original information. Eunice Butts, daughter of
Moody Bowie, gave me a letter my dad had written to her about Bowie's of
Central Mississippi many years ago when she wdas researching the family. This
letter goes back (it is undated) to about the middle 60's in my estimation. In
this letter he states Mary McNeill, Elmers first wife died and he remarried to
Ivory Doty Thompson. This must be correct because I can clearly recall going
to their home and always calling her "Cousin Ivory". I can't say I remember
Mary, his first wife.

He next found employement with the Mississippi Department of Transportation a nd retired from that position in 1970. He lives in Jackson, Hinds, MS.
