Find Family

* A Backward Glance...at the Hill family tree & more*

Updated May 18, 2001

One Hill family's search for their beginnings, starting with their Southern roots (NC, GA, TN, AL, TX).

Other surnames we are researching include SLATON (sometimes spelled Slayton/Slatton/Slaten, primarily in OK/TX/AL/SC/VA), ROE (primarily in TX, TN, NC, LA), GRAHAM (TX/TN/KY), and BINGHAM (TX/AL/MS/GA/Ireland).

I have a double ROE line in East Texas, living in Gregg and Harrison Counties. Luther "Luke" Roe b. 1869, son of Andrew Judge Roe and Elizabeth Frances HUFFMAN, married Fannie Roe, b. abt. 1870. They were married August 20, 1886 in Gregg Co., TX. Fannie was the daughter of Abe C. Roe, b. 1816 in NC and an unknown mother. The Roe families were intertwined with the HUFFMAN and REEL families of E. Texas through marriage. Seeking more information on all of these families.

I am also seeking information about the parents of Elijah or Elisha BINGHAM, twins born Sept. 1832 in Walton Co., GA. Elijah Arnold Bingham served in Co. F, (Gray's) Louisiana Infantry for the Confederacy, having enlisted May 5, 1862 in Vernon, LA. He was captured at Bayou Teche, LA and taken prisoner, then paroled at Prophet's Island, below Port Hudson, May 6, 1863. Elijah married Mary Elizabeth Smith, date and place unknown. They had seven children in TX and OK. He died in Bryan Co., OK and is buried in Old Bennington, OK.

And last but not least, I'm searching for the grandparents of James R. GRAHAM, born 1859 in Flintville, Lincoln Co., TN. He married Alice Barker on April 4, 1884, moved to Milam Co., TX, where he died from influenza on June 6, 1894 in Waxahachie, TX just after his wife gave birth to their fourth child. James' parents were John J. Graham (also spelled Grayham on one TN census) and married Susan M. Barker Sept. 30, 1857 in Flintville, TN. The parents of John J. Graham are Robert Graham, b. abt. 1790, and Mary Graham (maiden name unknown), b. abt. 1793. They show up on the 1830 Lincoln Co., TN census with 3 sons and 3 daughters ranging in age from under 5 to late teens. Mary Graham shows up later on the 1850 and 1860 census' for Lincoln Co., TN but was apparently widowed before 1842 when she remarried an Ebenezer Pickett on May 12, 1842. Mary's birthplace on the census is listed as NC, although the three eldest Graham children were all born in KY in the 1820's. Elizabeth, b. 1820, Dotson (Dodson), b. 1822, and Catherine, b. 1825. The family moved to TN prior to 1830 per the 1830 TN census and since John J. Graham was born in TN in 1832. I suspect Robert Graham was born in NC or KY circa 1790 and likely married Mary in one of those states, but I have no towns or counties from which to start my search. I also can't account for two of their six children. If any of the above sounds familiar I'd love to hear from you.

I have a great deal of information on my HILL side of the family and a fair amount on my SLATON family, which I would be happy to share if you find a connection! Visit my website via the link below for more details.
