Ancestors of James Leslie Bowman

Generation No. 9

      256. John Bowman, born Abt. 1661 in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico Parish, Va. (probably); died Abt. 1725 in Henrico Parish, Virginia. He was the son of 512. Robert Bowman, Jr. and 513. Sarah LNU. He married 257. Sarah Royall Abt. 1685 in Henrico Parish, Virginia.

      257. Sarah Royall, born Abt. 1665; died Aft. 1725. She was the daughter of 514. Joseph Royall and 515. Thomasin Bullington.

Notes for John Bowman:
On November 10, 1679 John Bowman deposed that he was 18 years old. [Weisiger, Henrico County Virginia, Deeds: 1677-1705, p.148] On the 1704 quit rent roll he is listed as John Bowman Jr, possessor of 300 acres [Annie Laurie Wright Smith, The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, p. 10]. The appellation of Jr in the quit rent rolls is an indication that his uncle John Sr was still living in 1704.
This John Bowman possibly was given the title of Doctor. Possibly he had some training in herbal medicine. William Bowman also was given the title of Doctor in at least one record in Rutherford County, N.C. Perhaps there was some family tradition.

From Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part One, 1654-1737, by B. B. Weisiger, III., on page 108 we learn that John Bowman had land on Swift Creek; on page 168 we find the will of Edward Bowman who speaks of having land on Swift Creek adjoining a tract belonging to his brother John Bowman. This appears to document a kinship link for William Bowman of Rutherford County, N.C. to the Bowmans who had settled earlier in Burke County, N.C.

Also to my son William, land bought of John Dauson and Hatcher, 186 acres, joining land of Elam and Stratton; also 500 acres in Amelia County called 'West Creek', also 1 lot in Bermuda Hundred Town it being the 4th lot I bought of Mr. Arthur Moseley; also negroes, silver spoons marked I. w P. To son John, my house and lot where I live, and 4 lots on the hill; also my plantation called 'Jefferys' which formerly belonged to Mr. John Bowman; also 400 acres at Smacks Creek in Amelia County; also 500 acres in Amelia next to my son William; also negroes and silver.

Dated 15 Nov. 1746
Wit: Littlebury Royall, Andrew Troughton, Francis Osborne
Recorded Dec. 1748

(Writer's note: It really galls me when I read these old wills. The daughters weren't worth much at all. They usually got diddly squat. Although, this one did get a lot more than most I have read.)

Notes for Sarah Royall:
This is an unproven identification of Sarah's family. It is highly dubious, but it is possible. Doubt centers around the lack of any record of such a daughter in the traditions of the Royall family, nor does the Royall family tradition recognize a marriage of Joseph Royall to a Bullington.

I presume that when the following researcher typed the children of Robert Bowman and Brown Royall he mistyped and that Sarah wound up misspelled as Darah. JLB

Hello Wanda,
I have John Sutton married to Sarah Cauthan 27 Dec., Goochland Co., VA; no children listed. His siblings : Darah Bowman, Royall Bowman, Jane Bowman. Their parents: Robert Bowman, b. bef. 1705 Henrico Co., VA; d. abt 1756, Amelia Co., VA. and Brown Royall.
I have No information on Faro Bowman nor Julia Faith of Kentucky. Could it be that they were of the New England Bowmans who came down the Ohio to settle in northern Kentucky circa 1775-80? All my Bowman strain are from around Henrico County, Virginia, which include Robert(John Sutton's father) and later Bowmans who moved south and west into the Blue Ridge. My great-great grandfather Samuel; (b. 1790 Henry Co, VA; d. 1861 Carroll Co.) is considered to be sire of all Bowmans of this particular area. And this is where my research is concentrated. Let us work this out. Marion

Stephen,

I just saw your query regarding Peyton MORTON. Unfortunately, I do not have information on the lawsuits.

I have seen that Royal BOWMAN married Elizabeth MORTON, daughter of Thomas MORTON on 5/18/1756 in Prince Edward County, VA Marriages on pg. 10. I'm not sure which Thomas MORTON this was.

Also, Robert BOWMAN was the witness to Peyton and Nancy WIMBISH's marriage. I'm not sure what the link between Robert and Royal BOWMAN was, either.

I have also been researching the MORTONs in Caswell County. Peyton, Meshak, Josiah, Mary, Step, Anderson and William, are all on the 1810 Caswell County census together.

My 3rd great-grandfather was Step MORTON, b. ca. 1784. The first record I find for him is his marriage license to Nancy RICHMOND, 1/2/1809, in Caswell County.

I have hit a brick wall with Step MORTON. Due to the timing of his birth, he does not directly appear on a census until 1810, in Caswell.

Step's son, Joseph S. MORTON, lists his father's birthplace as NC on later census records. My thinking is that he may be the son of Peyton, since the 1800 census lists a son under the 16-26 age bracket.

I noticed you have information on some of the land records for the Caswell county MORTONs. By any chance do you have anything on land for Step MORTON in Caswell County?
Where were you able to locate the land info on the MORTONs in Caswell?

I'd appreciate any help and would be happy to share any other information on the MORTON lines with you.

Best regards,

Cindy Morton Del Castillo

iii.   Sarah Bowman, born Bef. 1707 in henrico Parish, Virginia; died Bef. November 1736 in Henrico County, Virginia (?); married John Knibb in henrico Parish, Virginia; born Abt. 1685; died Bef. March 1737/38 in Henrico Parish, Virginia.
  Notes for Sarah Bowman:
This family is speculative. Sarah Bowman, daughter of John Bowman, did marry a Knibb and did have a son John, most probably named after his father or grandfather. In Weisiger's Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part Two 1737-1781, on p. 3, he provides two entries of interest from 1738:

Robert Wynne, who married a daughter of John Knibb, dec'd, petitions for a part of the said de'd's estate. John Archer, Joseph Royall, and John Worsham, Gent. to divide estate according to will of dec'd.

Katherine Knibb chooses John Knibb her guardian, who accepts, Joseph Royall & John Bowman, security.

Note that this family is speculative. Sarah Bowman Knibb and her son John Knibb are the only documented members of the family. Based on the claim of Robert Wynne against the estate of John Knibb, deceased, I have surmised that this is the husband of Sarah Bowman Knibb and I have also surmised that Katherine Knibb and John Knibb her guardian are the grandchildren of John Bowman. To have stood as guardian of a younger sister John Knibb must have been born in 1716 or earlier.
