Ancestors of James Leslie Bowman

      528. John Cosby, born 1623 in Ireland; died 1696 in York County, Virginia. He was the son of 1056. Charles Cosby and 1057. Mary Loftus. He married 529. Sarah.

      529. Sarah, died Bef. July 1740 in York County, Virginia.

Notes for John Cosby:
The most comprehensive published history and lineage of the Cosby family which I have found is contained in Walter Garland Duke's Henry Duke, Councilor, His Descendants and connections, which was published about 1947. A copy is contained in the South Historical Collection, housed in the Louis Round Wilson Graduate Library at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Because my prior data entries were lost in a hard drive crash subsequent to a motherboard meltdown these entries were hurriedly rebuilt using as the cut-and-paste source for all information on Samuel Cosby Sr's ancestral line the web page at www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/e/m/Charles-A-Demastus which without proper attribution appears to piggyback on and directly quote from Walter Garland Duke's book on the Duke family and their Cosby connections. If my memory serves correctly, Mr. Demastus does connect to the same Samuel Cosby and Elizabeth Faure who are the parents of our Mary Cosby, deriving his descent from Mary Cosby's brother, William.
The Cosby ancestral line is worthy of inclusion because it provides amusement, and perhaps makes history take on a greater personal or familial meaning. Doing the math shows that if a new generation appears on average at 25 year intervals that going back 250 years gives 10 generations and more than 1024 ancestors if there are no duplications of descent. Roughly that means going back 500 years gives anyone the potential of having 1 million ancestors, 750 years equals 1 billion (american style) ancestors, and 1000 years means 1 trillion ancestors, a number far in excess of all humans then living. The Cosby line purports to go back a thousand years in some lines. Of course this means the line is tracking individuals of some notoriety and property, or in other words, nobles and royals.
The soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup FAQ file estimates that 167 colonists of known royal descent have produced an estimated 100 million Americans with claims to royal connections. In simple terms, royal connections are common, even a limited number of documented lines produces a huge number of relations over a period of centuries.
Demastus says that John Cosby came to Virginia with his father. Eventually he owned substantial acreage in York, King and Queen, and New Kent counties. Some of the land was obtained through credit for having paid the passage to Virginia of 48 persons. John Cosby appears to have married twice, but Demastus gives only the name of the second wife, Sarah, and credits all known children of John Cosby to this second union. One daughter, not identified, supposedly married a JACKSON. Sarah survived John, her will was probated in York County on July 21, 1740.

      32. John Cosby, born 1623 in Stradbally, Queen's Co., Ireland; died March 1695/96 in York Co., VA. He was the son of 64. Charles (1) Cosby and 65. Mary Loftus. He married 33. Sarah in VA.
33. Sarah, died 1740.

Notes for John Cosby:
From DUKE FAMILY GENEALOGY: "Born in 1623 in Ireland, came to Virginia with his father and became the owner of extensive tracts of land in York, King and Queen, and New Kent Counties, granted him for the transportation of 48 persons. He married twice. His second wife, Sarah, survived him and her will was probated in York County on July 21, 1740."
From `Cosby/Carpenter`: 'John Cosby, born 1623 in England [or Ireland], was a planter in York County, Va. where he died in 1696.
'He owned extensive tracts of land in York, King and Queen, and New Kent Counties.
'The records of the Court of York Co., show that on Nov. 12, 1678, John Cosby, John Sanders and Argall Blackston were appointed "Surveyers of the Highways of York Parish". In the records of the Land Grant Patents of Virginia, vol. 4, pg. 72. appears an entry of 700 acres of land in New Kent County, north east side of Mattapony River to John Cosby on Jan. 5, 1656, for the transportation of 15 persons; in the same volume and page is another entry to John Cosby of 1000 acres in New Kent County on the south side of York River for the transportation of 20 people. On the same date, same book, pg. 73, is an entry to John Cosby of 800 acres in New Kent Co., on the northeast side of Mattapony River [200 acres by purchase and 600 acres for transportation of 18 persons].
'On Nov. 3, 1657, his young daughter, Mary Cosby, named for his mother, Mary Loftus, accidentally set fire to her clothes and was burned to death. She probably was the daughter of his first wife, as his widow, Sarah, survived until 1740, which precludes the possibility of her having had a child born prior to 1657. John Cosby named his eldest son for his father, Charles Cosby.
'The will of John Cosby was written on Sept. 4, 1695, and probated on March 4, 1696: that of his widow, Sarah, is dated "Anno Domini 1740", and was probated in York Co., July 21, 1740.'
