Ancestors of James Leslie Bowman

1056. Charles Cosby, born September 12, 1585 in Stradbally Abbey, Ireland. He was the son of 2112. Alexander Cosby and 2113. Dorcas Sydney. He married 1057. Mary Loftus.

1057. Mary Loftus, died November 23, 1623. She was the daughter of 2114. Adam Loftus and 2115. Jane Pruden.

Notes for Charles Cosby:
The most comprehensive published history and lineage of the Cosby family which I have found is contained in Walter Garland Duke's Henry Duke, Councilor, His Descendants and connections, which was published about 1947. A copy is contained in the South Historical Collection, housed in the Louis Round Wilson Graduate Library at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Because my prior data entries were lost in a hard drive crash subsequent to a motherboard meltdown these entries were hurriedly rebuilt using as the cut-and-paste source for all information on Samuel Cosby Sr's ancestral line the web page at www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/e/m/Charles-A-Demastus which without proper attribution appears to piggyback on and directly quote from Walter Garland Duke's book on the Duke family and their Cosby connections. If my memory serves correctly, Mr. Demastus does connect to the same Samuel Cosby and Elizabeth Faure who are the parents of our Mary Cosby, deriving his descent from Mary Cosby's brother, William.

Charles Cosby emigrated to Virginia in part due to the influence and urging of his Zouche connections who had previously gone to the colony. Charles settled about 1628 in York County, in that portion later to be seperated off as Warwick County.

Child of Charles Cosby and Mary Loftus is:
528 i.   John Cosby, born 1623 in Ireland; died 1696 in York County, Virginia; married Sarah.

1104. John Greenwood, born Abt. 1619 in England. He was the son of 2208. William Greenwood and 2209. Mary Bellhouse.

Notes for Gilbert Harrell:

F2.) John Harrill: John Harril was a witness to his father’s last will and testament. He was also mentioned in the will of Houson/Howson Kenner. In Howson Kenner’s will dated April 9, 1778 and proved in Fauquier Co., Va., he describes a tract of land he sold to William Seaton, land upon which John Bials and John Harrel were living.

F3.) Capt. Howsen Kenner: Why did Mary Harrill nominate Howsen Kenner to administrate her husband’s estate? Who was Howsen Kenner anyway? Kenner was a Justice of the Peace for Prince William Co. He was also a vestryman for Dettingen Parish in Prince William Co. He was a large landowner in Prince William Co. We can gather from his will that he may have rented land to John Harrill. Chances are, he also rented land to James Harrill. Perhaps if he were James’ landlord, Mary would have found it very natural to turn to him for assistance.

According to an extensive nine page internet posting on Genforum by Kiley Walbom, Howson was christened in St. Stephen’s Parish in Northumberland Co., Va. On May 10, 1712. Capt. Kenner is buried near Somerville, Virginia about ½ mile west of Rte. 610. (This might be the general vicinity where James Harrill lived.)

The arrows of James Harrill/Harrold and Capt. Howson Kenner both point to the Northern Neck.

The following persons, who were associated with Richard Harrel, have been investigated, but no information was discovered concerning their roots: Leonard Burton, Walter Cunningham, Ruben Paget, Philip Emlie, John Kelley, Howard Gibson, Joseph Hoskins, Thomas Lann, Thomas Lenn, William Colbee and John Sellers.

What do we know about the Northern Neck Harrolds/Harrels?
