      9729. Elizabeth ???

Notes for John Setle:
My source for information on the Suttle ancestry of Martha Harrill Bowman is a massive family history, William Emmett Reese, "The Settle-Suttle Family", (Thomasson Printing Co., Carrollton, Georgia, 1974), which is part of the holdings in the Old Tryon County Genealogical Society library collection. My notes were taken in 1984. When I looked at these materials they were available through the Old Tryon County History room at Isothermal Community College in Forest City, North Carolina.
Subsequently, the Society's files and books have been moved to a new location and are not nearly so accessible to the general public or even dues-paying members. Thus, while theoretically I should be able to replace the misplaced reference, practically this may prove quite difficult. Of course, if you read this note I probably have not yet obtained the misplaced reference and you should feel free to obtain it and make the needed correction yourself. The Society generally has a volunteer available on an unpredictable schedule and by scheduled appointments at the Society offices in downtown Forest City.
The Settle/Suttle family tale is a bit complicated from the beginning. The name has many variant spellings amongst which we find: Suttle, Subtell, Setel, Suttles, Sutells, Setthell, Settles, Settle, Setle, etc. John Setle used the variant "Settle" on occassion.
This surname is of English origin, existing in Yorkshire prior to the Norman invasion of 1066. The probable ancestral seat of the family lies in Settle, West Riding, Yorkshire. By the 16th Century a large Settle Population existed in Barwick-in-Elmet parish aabout 45 miles southeast of Settle, West Riding.
The first documented connection for the family in America is Francis Settle who emigrated to Virginia in 1657. Tentatively, researchers have concluded that Francis Settle came fro Barwick-in-Elmet parish, Yorkshire.
