Theodore W. Happold | Electrical engineer, 89
Theodore W. Happold, 89, a retired electrical engineer, died Wednesday
of an aortic aneurysm at Springfield Hospital.
He had been a resident of Drexel Hill for 40 years after living in Upper
Darby and West Philadelphia.
In a long career in engineering, Mr. Happold worked for several
companies, including Sun Ship, ITE and Raytheon. He retired in 1983.
He took part in a variety of projects, including the switch-gear plans
for the Broad Street Subway and the electrical system for the NSS
Savannah, the world's first nuclear-powered cargo ship, which was built
at New York Shipyard in Camden.
Mr. Happold, who grew up in South Philadelphia, earned a bachelor's
degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University in 1953.
He was active in the Spruce Street Baptist Church, serving as a trustee
and missionary treasurer. He also was on the church board.
Mr. Happold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; a daughter,
Dorothy Field; a son, William; four sisters; two brothers; five
grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 P.M. Sunday at Frank C. Videon
Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd., Broomall. Services will be at 10 a.m.
Monday at Spruce Street Baptist Church, Newtown Square. Friends may call
at the church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel
Hill.
Memorial donations may be made to the missionary committee of Spruce
Street Baptist Church, Gradyville Road and Route 252, Newtown Square,
Pa. 19073.
