The Boyles and Pearse Families of West Somerset, EnglandUpdated June 18, 2002 | |
| The BOYLES family appeared in West Somerset in the mid C18th, when John Boyles married Ann Thomas at Cutcombe in 1744 and other family members settled in Minehead. As Minehead was a port with a thriving trade with Ireland at that time it is possible that they came from there. John had two sons: William, from whom all of the West Somerset family are descended; and James, who left the area with his entire family soon after his son William`s marriage to Catherine CLATWORTHY in 1803. Did they emigrate? This family has been extensively researched and contains iron-miners, agricultural labourers and a soldier who fought at Lucknow in the Indian Mutiny. Information also held on the related PEARSE family of Withycombe and the GODSELLs of Herefordshire. My PEARSE ancestors originated with Amos PEARSE of Winsford, who lived there in the 18th century. His only son John moved to Carhampton, marrying there and raising a large family. Their offspring quickly spread throughout many West Somerset parishes, including Withycombe, Williton and Watchet. Later some members emigrated to Canada and Australia, where their descendants reside today. |
