V-6478- HANNAH PRICE (3905), b. April 25, 1789 d. Aug 15, 1863; married
____, John, son of Abraham and Barbara (Hershey) Stouffer (Stauffer), b. Nov
30, 1787 d. July 22, 1867
Abraham Stouffer was a son of Henry and Magdalena (Hess) Stauffer;
grandson of Jonannes Stauffer and Kinget Heistand, widow of Michael Risser,
to whom he was married in 1685. Johannes was born 1650-1655 at Alzheim on
the Rhine, near Zurich, Switzerland.
They were Mennonites and were persecuted by the Zwinglians on account
of their faith and driven from their lands. In this strait all the family
except the oldest daughter emigrated to America. They left their home Nov
5, 1709, sailed down the Rhine from Weissennan on Nov 8th, and reached
London, Jan 20, 1710, whence they came to America in the spring of the same
year. They settled on the Schuylkill River at or near Valley Forge in
Chester County.
Jonannes father was Daniel Stauffer, a descendant of the ancient House
of Hohenstauffen, in Swabia, a generation of knights called Stauffacher, who
at the time of the freeing of Switzerland by William Tell, were wealthy
farmers and rendered great assistance. He was born at Alzheim or
Weissenham, near Zurich, about 1630.
Abraham Stouffer, in the spring of 1792, settled in the vicinity of
Chambersburg, Pa., where he purchased several farms and built a flour mill
in 1793, the latter was operated by his direct descendants for ninety years
and from whom the present village of Stoufferstown received its name.
Much of the matter relating to the descendants of John and HANNAH
(PRICE) Stouffer, from the "Stouffer General Memoranda" of Miss Kate S.
Snively, Greencastle, Pa.

EV. HENRY STRICKLER:
Moved to Mt. Carroll, Illinois in 1841 with entire family except Jacob.

See also, Heckman, "Brethren in Northern Ill. and Wisconsin", pages 14+:
Page 17: "The last of these three families to come west was the Henry and Mary Price Strickler family, who arrived in Carroll County in 1841. Of course Mary would want to live near her sisters so the Stricklers bought a farm adjoining the Arnold farm, the residents being not far apart. With the Emmerts living in Mt. Carroll, only four miles distant, these three families closely knit by blood and spiritual ties became the nucleus for the first Church of the Brethren in the northern part of Illinois. We may consider Daniel Arnold a lay leader of deep-seated religious character. In his home and in the schoolhouse he was the church leader before there was a minister among them. Henry Strickler was a minister when he came to Illinois, the first Brethren minister for our present state district. His arrival begat new life and injected a more active church atmosphere throughout the settlement.
Henry Strickler had been called to the ministry in the historic Price meetinghouse near Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, on Oct 23, 1825. His sixteen years of active service in the ministry had prepared him for effective leadership in his new environment. . . ."

Page 212: "Henry Strickler, 1878-1876 Born in Franklin County, PA, March 11; son of Henry\\
Strickler, married Mary Price, granddaughter of John Price of Indian descent. Henry was chosen minister in 1825 at Price's meetinghouse. They came to Arnold's Grove, Ill., in 1841. He was the first Brethren minister to locate permanently in Carroll County...... He lived a good life but was not a strong preacher. His son, Henry P., was called to the ministry in 1859 and moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, in 1867. His father (blind) and mother followed and lived with the son. Both are buried in the Sheller cemetery at Ivester, Iowa."

He was elected to the ministry at Price's Meeting near Waynesville, PA Oct. 23, 1825. Moved to Carroll Co., Ill in 1841 with all family except Jacob. (Wanger, page 704)

Wanger lists 9 children, page 704, not including Henry P.
