This family research home page revolves around two families of Boyds, one in Canada, the other in the United States, both having a common ancestor in James Bucky Boyd, son of James (Sr.), born in Ireland around 1799. The brothers, Norman and Gordon Boyd and their families are residents of Toronto, Ontario. They are descendants of Alonzo Boyd, son of James Bucky Boyd, son of James from Ireland. The American Boyds, Gloria, Lawrence, William, and Jack, are residents of Arizona. They are descendants of Lawrence Hugh Boyd (Sr.), son of Hugh A. Boyd, son of James Bucky Boyd, son of James (Sr.) from Ireland. Another Canadian cousin, Wesley Hugh Boyd lives in Gravenhurst, Ontario and is a descendant of James Bucky Boyd through Hugh A. Boyd. For many years, we have sought our Irish roots by identifying the parents and birthplace of James Boyd (Sr.). We believe James was born in the county of Armagh, Northern Ireland around 1799 and emigrated to Ontario, Canada sometime between 1813 and 1820. James had two brothers, Robert and David Boyd, born between 1791 and 1798 and emigrating to Ontario between 1813 and 1820. Robert married Elizabeth Myles who was born in Ireland around 1791. They had no children. David married Susannah and had a family of ten children in Ontario. We believe James (Sr.) and his wife, Rosanna, had six children in Ontario. Two of their sons, John and James (Jr.) married McClelland sisters from Armagh. John married Anne McClelland and James Bucky married Eliza McClelland. James' second wife Hanna Burns (Byrns) was born in Ireland around 1832. The father of the McClelland sisters was John McClelland and the mother was Mary Warnock, also from Armagh. They were married about 1825 in Ireland and emigrated to Canada in the early 1840's. Mary Warnock was born In Armagh around 1800 and died in Ontario around 1875. The other Warnock sisters may have been Agnes, Jane, and Elizabeth and their husbands' surnames may have been Adams, Birch, and Frazer. One of David Boyd's sons also married an Irish woman, Catherine Brock, born in Ireland, about 1840. So far, the Irish connection has evaded us, but we fondly hope that someday, perhaps through this home page, we will be able to tell our children and grandchildren all about their Irish roots. In the meantime, we hope that this page and the communications it enables will help others in their family research. |
