Includes NotesNotes for Nathaniel Brance Boykin:
A Smith County Family's Heritage
By Alva Dairel Boykin

Delilah Boykin, second wife of
Solomon Boykin Jr., and four
sons moved to Mississippi, to
what is now Smith County in
1823. Solomon had died in
Clarke County, Ala., in 1821.
The boys were Abraham, John,
James Alexander, and Francis.
Abraham Boykin had one son
before he died in 1825. This son,
Stephen R. Boykin, was raised
by his Uncle John. A descendant
of this family was the Charley
Boykin family of Morton. The
other three had large families.
John Boykin had 15 children:
five boys and 10 girls. He re-
mained in Smith County and has
many descendants in the county
today. John is buried at the Old
Boykin Church Cemetery with
some of the early descendants.
All five of John's sons served in
the Confederate Army, along
with Stephen R., which he raised
(Abraham's son). Two of John's
sons plus Stephen died in the
Civil War.
James Alexander had 13 chil-
dren: 10 boys and three girls.
James moved from Smith
County to Clark County, Miss.,
around 1840 and from there to
Texas, where many of his de-
scendants are today. Eight of
Alexander's sons served in the
Confederate Army. Five died in
the Civil War. Three at
Vicksburg.
Francis (my great-great-grand-
father) had 13 children: three
girls and 10 boys. Francis re-
mained in Smith County and has
many descendants in the county
today. Four of his sons moved to
the Mississippi Delta, Sharkey
County, around 1880, and they
have many descendants in that
area. We refer to them as the
Delta Boykins. Eight of Francis'
sons served in the Confederate
Army, two killed. Francis is
buried at an old cemetery about
seven miles northeast of Raleigh
on the place owned by the Glenn
Boykin family (Jim.Boykin
place).

A six-generation line of the
Francis Boykin family is buried
at Trinity Methodist Church
Cemetery. Jane Royals Boykin
(wife of Francis) Nathaniel
Brance Boykin, James Franklin
Boykin, Alva Breland Boykin,
Herbert Glenn Boykin, Frank
Breland Boykin. Many other de-
scendants of Francis' are buried
at this cemetery. Many of John's
descendants are also buried
there.
Descendants of both John and
Francis Boykin were active in
the life of Trinity Methodist
Church. These families include:
James O. (Jim) Boykin, Thomas
Jefferson (Jeff) Boykin, Jullian
Monroe (Rhody) Boykin, Jesse
Bailey (Mrs. Sally was a Boykin)
descendants of John; Alva
Boykin and Henry M. (Jack)
Boykin, descendants of Francis.
The name of one of the sons of
Francis, Nathaniel Brance
Boykin, (my great-grandfather)
is on the plaque in the Smith
County Courthouse at Raleigh as
the chairman of the board of su-
pervisors when it was built.
Solomon Boykin Jr. and his
first wife, Judith, had six chil-
dren who remained in Alabama.
Many of their descendants are in
Alabama today. I have enjoyed
meeting and corresponding with
many of these in the past year
and felt a kinship with all.
Burwell Boykin was one of
these half brothers. Some of
Burwell's descendants I have
come to know are: Stennis
Luther James Boykin, descen-
dant of Christopher Boykin, son
of Burwell; Gains Martin
Boykin, descendant of Alexander
Boykin, son of Burwell; Leroy
Boykin, descendant of Solomon
Boykin, son of Burwell.
I have attended family re-
unions with these and their fam-
ilies in Robertsdale, Ala., and
Quitman, Miss.

N. B. Boykin was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors in 1912 when the Smith County Court House was Built. The Smith County Reformer, Raleigh, MS, October 12, 1922, wrote: Hon. N. B. Boykin died Sunday. Hon. N. B. Boykin of Lemon, one of the County's best and most widely known citizens, passed away at his home near that place at an early hour on last Sunday Morning. He had been in very poor health for many months and his death, though universally regretted throughout the county, was not unexpected. He served for many years as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Smith County, in which capacity he proved himself a man of progressive ideas, broad vision and great ability. The new courthouse, and increased schoolterm and much of the improvement in our highway system, are the work of his administration.
