The Irish in Philadelphia in the 1840's?Historical records and newspaper accounts describe riots in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. The Irish had arrived in droves to work as servants and laborers.Despite the unrest, on the west side of town, a gentleman by the name of PHILIP DONOHOE rents 3520 Market Street and starts a grocery business with his sons. So begins my quest.I have a picture of the business with two horse-drawn delivery vans with a sign above the business stating "Donohoe and Sons" since 1845.Here are some facts I do know:PHILIP (1821 about - 1884) married RACHAEL LYNCH (1825 - 1881).Born to the couple were:DANIEL(1857 or 59 -1914)m MARY WEBB(d.1914), ANN (d.1880) marries JOHN KELLY, PHILIP(died in infancy),PHILIP BERNARD, and MICHAEL IRWIN.My direct line then goes to DANIEL married MARY WEBB. Six boys and the last one is a girl, RACHAEL who marries GUSTAV BRAUN. | |
