4. JONATHAN4 MALTBY (JONATHAN3, JONATHAN2, WILLIAM1 MALTBIE) was born December 17, 1744 in Stamford, CT, and died February 11, 1798 in Fairfield, CT. He married ELIZABETH ANN ALLEN October 23, 1768, daughter of DAVID ALLEN and SARAH GOLD.

Gwinnett County, Georgia, Families, 1818-1968, with Supplement, edited by Alice Smythe McCabe, page 319, lists birth year as 1748 but father died in 1745. Birth place also listed as Stratford but no Stratford, CT.

After they married Jonathan and Elizabeth lived in a handsome two-year-old house in Fairfield which is occupied today and is protected in the Fairfield Historical District. (Gwinnett County, Georgia, Families, 1818-1968, with Supplement, edited by Alice Smythe McCabe, page 319)

Jonathan joined Continental Navy in December 1775. One of his shipmates on the flagship "Alfred" was Lt. John Paul Jones. In 1791, ten years after Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, the forerunner of the present-day Coast Guard came into existence. Ten small boats, about 46 feet long, gradually made their appearance in coastal waters from New England to Georgia. Jonathan was given command of the cutter "Argus" in 1791 and patrolled the coast from Long Island Sound to Narragansett Bay. The facts presented here are based on the assumption this is the same John Allen that was a brother-in-law of William Maltbie.

History of Gwinnett County, Georgia, 1818-1943, Vol I, by James C. Flanigan, states on page 329 that an Allen was killed by Indians in 1836 at Shepherd's Plantation and on page 362 that J. M. Allan was killed by same.
